ten strangest things banned in China number ten Peppa Pig this particular cartoon has been called a lot of things by a lot of people's Swedes funny irritating or the Chinese government gangster okay that admittedly sounds beyond ridiculous but there is some kind of logic to the seemingly bizarre decision to ban the cartoon on that gangster basis you see the show gained popularity with a subsection of Chinese youth named shall we Ren or society people in other words people who don't fit into social expectations and hold anti-establishment views their love for Peppa Pig and their derision against the man manifested itself in memes online content and even tattoos making her a prime target for state censorship in a country that values social cohesion over pretty much everything else so inevitably the social people saw the hashtag Peppa Pig tag pulled from the video side do Yan along with references scrubbed from Chinese Twitter equivalents Weibo but that said China hasn't completely given up on pepper the State Administration of radio film and television just wants her to stop mixing with bad influences and so in 2019 a Peppa Pig film was released celebrating the familial aspects of the Chinese New Year specifically for the Chinese market yeah that'll saw the kids out number 9 time travel you're probably thinking now wait China banned time travel the concept that probably only exists in science fiction well yeah kind of I'm pretty sure she Jinping wouldn't allow any Tom Dick or Harry to make a time paradox if it did exist but we're actually talking about specifically television here the State Administration of radio film and television yet that's right those guys again and any now have some relating to time travel on the basis that they disrespect history wait so they're saying historical figures and villains head weren't accurate I am shook earth anyway this is all because of a trend on Chinese TV towards show like Shen hua or myth which shows modern people sent back to ancient China and adjusting to find a happy life you can see why that would worry the government of a culturally restrictive States into bloomin escapist fiction might very well be a sign of dissatisfaction with imposed social norms so yeah probably best to nip that one in the bud if you are a Chinese bureaucrats and if you are number eight Richard Gere okay so if you were born in this century you might have never seen one of Richard Gere's films since the formal Hollywood a-listers career peaking out somewhat in the early noughties part of that is because he doesn't have the most comfortable relationship with China as a Buddhist and close personal friend of the Dalai Lama gear has been an outspoken supporter of the Free Tibet movement and a critic of the autonomous regions treatment as a result China is not best pleased with him and gear isn't welcome in the country in the opinion of the man himself the clashes led to Chinese investors refusing to work with him since China is increasingly a major player in movie success Gere believes that Hollywood sees him as a liability but gear isn't the only celebrity to have a run-in with the People's Republic both Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt over controversies over the movies couldn't done and seven years in Tibet and even Katy Perry was denied a visa in 2017 after supporting the Taiwan independence movement I mean hey whoever said principle for a good thing in show business number seven Avatar 2d at the time of its release in 2009 avatar was a true cinematic landmark that's if you ignore the fact it wasn't very good but still China was no exception with a seriously impressive box-office return of 204 million dollars for the movie but that didn't mean the film's run went completely without incident shortly after the film's release the state banned avatar but only the 2d version and not the 3d version the official explanation was that the majority of tickets were sold for the 3d showings but that majority turned out to be two-thirds so it doesn't make a lot of sense to lose up to 33% of your paintings similarly it was claimed that the move was an attempt of rent of Western cinema dominating domestic films but even so why ban only one version of the film but there is a more critical explanation here that is that more reasonably priced 2d showings were being pulled to keep poorer people from seeing the movie whose plant bore notes for resemblance to the country's own forced eviction policies in any case audiences were instead treated to a confucius biopic which is just what every sci-fi fan number six Winnie the Pooh as you've seen Chinese social media likes to incorporate cartoons into its political statement not unlike us really mother doesn't just stop an old peps specifically in this case president xi jinping doesn't take too kindly to comparisons between his appearance and that of cartoon bear Winnie the Pooh users on Weibo to Mina fiying their president by lining up Pooh next two shots of him like this one with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo our BAE this one with Barack Obama and this one with a wee little toy car in response the CCP censored images like that along with any reference to Pooh or even other topics that overlap like comedian John Oliver who mentioned the story on his TV show and who also looks a little bit like the owl's to the outside world it's easy to see this as a humorous quirk of a foreign political system but it's actually quite worrying since the CCP voted to end term limits in 2018 essentially making jimping president for life he has stepped up on his assault of critical behavior online that could very well be a step towards a personal vice grip on the country that being said he might want to look up the Streisand effect number 5 jasmine Tunisia was one of the first nations to ignite politically during the Arab Spring where protests erupting throughout the Middle East in countries like Egypt Libya and Syria these whatever grievances like authoritarianism and low living standards that on the moniker of the Jasmine Revolution after the country's national flower well as it turns out resisting oppression is pretty contagious as the scent of the Jasmine Revolution wafted to China too well at least for a little bit anyway seeing the impact of the Tunisian efforts China began its own Jasmine Revolution predominantly online in February 2011 unfortunately those attempts to bring about political change didn't last all that long with potential protests quashed speech suppressed and even several international journalists beaten by Beijing police the state then did everything it could to scrub any mention of jasmine from popular discussion this included the removal of any mention online banning them from wholesale flower markets and canceling the annual jasmine festival though it's not such an issue right now you can bet your bottom you arm that it would be gone with any mention a flower scented unrest number for free reincarnation okay so when I say that I'm talking specifically about the Dalai Lama the spiritual leader of the Tibetan Buddhist faith as you may very well know the current Dalai Lama Tenzin Gatto isn't exactly popular with the Chinese Communist Party his view supporting Tibetan independence have earned him exile status and the odds are that's not changing anytime soon as such the CCP has decided to regulate the reincarnation of leading Tibetan Buddhist figures mandating that their successes must be approved by the state so in effect China has banned a spiritual process or as you'll see that banned not doing it that's because in recent years Gatto has also discussed the fact he will be the last Dalai Lama you can probably guess why he'd be reluctant to turn over leadership of his religion to the administrative body to exiled him but China wasn't exactly thrilled about that either as it repeatedly stated that it will choose the next Dalai Lama that was the case in 1995 and Beijing chose the Panchen Lama the second most senior Lama overriding Gatsas choice completely number three unauthorized religious practice officially China is an atheist state however it does tolerate five religions albeit on uneasy terms that's Protestantism Catholicism down wisdom Islam and Buddhism but in recent years we've seen the state under President Xi Jinping yep him again adopt a more hardline stance on religion in general that hasn't been seen in decades adherents to a faith has grown significantly in the country which the Council on Foreign Relations attributes to a spiritual vacuum the CCP though has seen this as a threat to the authority of the party in state affairs but the ccp's animosity towards religion doesn't end at stopping people from practicing religion instead it's become forceful suppression the United Nations has fiercely criticized China in recent years for its harsh treatment of the weakened Muslim minority in the Western Jinjiang region the ethnically Turkic group has seen banned on long beards and veiled strict community monitoring and even re-education camps the stated aim is to root out extremism through thought transformation which sounds Orwellian enough but critics have even called the policy ethnic cleansing number 2 ASMR chances are you've probably heard a various Ammar of the eccentric mostly underground practice of whispering into a microphone well either that or scratching rough surfaces to achieve a satisfying tingle that resonates in the air many people me included don't feel anything but a certain subsection feeling intense at the sound of ASMR content but apparently the Chinese government isn't so keen in the summer of 2018 the government issued a statement claiming that adult content was being released under the guise of ASMR and so banned the videos entirely the move is part of a larger clamped down on explicit content launched in 2014 in an attempt to clean up the Internet good luck with that one that includes the Chinese practice of ice eating which I don't understand burning on adult crowns but hey I do feel pretty bad for the youth of China's teeth in any case it's not uncommon to hear that ASMR is a bit naughty but that doesn't appear to be true a 2015 study of US and European ASMR Watchers found that just 5% use it for that kind of gratification assuming similar figures for China it all seems like a bit of an overreaction as for their 5 percent number work hip hop on TV in case you haven't noticed by now the ruling Chinese ccp has a little bit of a problem that counterculture whether it's in the form of cartoon characters fanciful science or in this case hip hop in 2018 the state broadcast and looked at the burgeoning hip-hop scene and decided to halt the proliferation of ideas whose heart and morality are not aligned with the party and whose morality is not noble as well as coming actors who had tasteless vulgar and obscene in layman's terms that basically means cutting all references to tattoos and anything dangerous or inflammatory about music and cultures so you know the good bits it's largely because a lot of hip hop's character it's rooted in capitalism and anti-establishment views which aren't exactly in keeping with China's preoccupation with social cohesion Chinese hip-hop star PG one who was denounced for his lyrical content and accused celebrity affair even blamed his transgressions on black culture yikes that said it's hit show rap of China does still exist but it's contestants all espoused aside to be more wholesome patriotic bars I'm suppose that's better than prison bars so that was ten strange things that are banned in China what else is perplexingly prohibited in the world's most populous country let us know in the comments down below and make sure to LIKE and subscribe to author intense and hey while you're at it check out this great all-time tens video on screen right now you
