in 2011 there were more than 50 000 abandoned storage units in america that held about 1 billion dollars worth of items this fact was a perfect base for storage wars the hit a e network reality tv show about a group of veteran bidders the show revolves around the unknown the strange and the unexpected all of which lay safely sheltered within the abandoned lockers uncovered by the star team of bargain hunters and treasure seekers over 12 seasons storage wars has proved the truthfulness of the saying one man's trash is another man's treasure and so became one of the most popular shows on reality tv since the buyers can only take a quick look at the storage units before making a purchase they can't know whether they are going to find a locker full of junk or something valuable despite the plenty of strange but useless items certain discoveries rose to the surface as especially exceptional so without further ado here are 10 candidates for some of the most astonishing buys that ever occurred on storage wars though he wasn't particularly remembered for his huge paydays former storage wars star barry weiss known as the collector got a big hit early on in the show after bidding 275 on a unit filled with salon supplies the retired antique collector was always entertaining to watch as he made his bids took his chances and often fell flat on his face but now and then he would find something worthwhile as it happened back in the fourth episode of season one what at first appeared to be a total flop turned into a huge win when barry discovered a 1928 marshall and wendell miniature salesman piano amid the products the instrument was valued between ten thousand and twelve thousand dollars which was not bad at all considering it was one of the cheapest deals on the show the first episode of season 10 featured another huge find this time it was another way of fun in the form of video games renee nahoda landed the locker for a meager fifteen hundred dollars and found out that it was filled with vintage videos and game hardware plus cartridges the collection was monstrous filling up a large locker and assembled by a collector who knew their stuff there was neria duplicate in the mix with the dusty pile of memorabilia containing everything from rare sega genesis games to a copy of the nest game bubble bobble part 2 that was worth several hundred dollars on its own for this lucky buyer the games were valued at a total of fifty thousand dollars just enough for the buyer to call it one of his best buys dave hester was a savvy though confrontational player who did well during his time on the program in 2010 he demonstrated how lucky a buyer he was he bid 750 on a storage unit filled with old newspapers although it seemed at first that he bought a load of outdated periodicals it turned out they were of great value the large cachet of newspapers had a really important publication date august 16 1977 the date when elvis presley the king of rock and roll died with such a large quantity of highly valued newspapers that were in great condition hester knew he had a fortune on his hands he was absolutely right they turned out to be limited edition newspapers from a very important moment in history valued at around 90 thousand dollars even more surprising was the fact that someone would gather up that many collectible papers into one place and then lose the locker because they didn't bother to pay for it in 2018 storage wars star dan dotson and his wife laura sold a unit for 500 not long after a woman approached dan and informed him that he had sold a unit to her husband which contained a safe when the safe was professionally opened by a locksmith the man was floored to discover a hoard of bills inside which had apparently been hidden away in the storage unit the money added up to a mind blowing seven and a half million dollars all in cash and all unclaimed however an attorney arrived soon afterwards informing them that the safe and the contents actually belonged to his client confused and shocked the owners turned down an initial offer of six hundred thousand dollars as a reward for the return of the money but afterwards accepted a counter offer of 1.2 million since the incredible find was reported it's been widely speculated that the cache was from a cartel or mafia connection back in season five daryl sheets managed to hit the jackpot on a storage unit once again when he dubbed the holy grail of toys he ended up winning a storage unit full of an entire inventory from a comic book store there was everything from vintage comic books to a toy collection containing valuable action figures still in mint condition in their original boxes it was an endless supply of gi joes hot wheels and a whole host of other collectible dolls and toys along with a massive collection of comics with about 3 000 books which daryl sheets valued at approximately 10 dollars apiece the count kept rising as sheets tallied up the mountain of collectibles finally setting on a total that topped 90 thousand dollars the next item was one of those strange things that only true collectors would probably find interesting that was barry weiss who stumbled upon something quite unusual in the season 2. after he showed up late to an auction he quickly bought what appeared to be a worthless locker with a couch and a few odds and ends all for a seemingly overpriced 1525 dollars everyone else rolled their eyes and moved on to the next unit but weiss's seemingly harebrained mistake actually turned out to be quite on purpose the collector knew what he was doing he had spotted something that he just had to own it was a small box tucked away in the back with something that he absolutely needed to investigate it turned out he had found a sculpture of a wooden bust with real inset dentures and glass eyes along with a hollowed window in the back of its head that revealed an entire scene taking place inside the statue's brain the 6 000 appraisal that weiss received wasn't enough to tempt his off-beat tastes and the collector chose to keep it for his own private collection rather than sell back in the late 2000s a florida usa radio station decided to purchase a locker containing documents and paper for around 300 not having any idea of what was in store deciding to play the storage wars game turned out to be a pretty good idea those documents and papers turned out to be photographs handwritten lyric sheets musical arrangements contracts and even royalty checks belonging to 60 superstars the beach boys the locker had originally been rented in the 1970s but sometime around 2006 the hirer stopped paying and the contents were sold off to repay the bill and to clear the locker after a lengthy court battle which involved the band members trying to reclaim the material it was eventually sold through a sealed bid auction for around 6 million dollars storage wars stars dan and laura dotson hit the headlines in 2011 when they sold the storage unit for 100 with no idea of its contents however that proved to be one of the most remarkable sales of their career the container turned out to contain an antique pirate chest stuffed with antique spanish pieces of eight some as old as the 16th century worth five hundred thousand dollars the box of coins was so heavy that it required three people to move it out of storage they revealed that an ecstatic new storage locker owner who had chosen to remain anonymous had actually outdone daryl wise hester and the whole storage wars crew in the find of a lifetime the artwork is not a really crazy item it is probably one of the most common things the bidders can find in these abandoned lockers but when a man found a locker full of abandoned artwork in season three's finale it was the show's biggest find to date daryl sheets aka the gambler made an astonishing find when he took a huge gamble on a locker priced at 3 600 and found a collection of frank gutierrez artwork there were several pieces of art of all shapes and sizes and when the proud new owner brought in an art expert to price the stash out he was floored to find out that the whole collection was worth upwards of three hundred thousand dollars three hundred thousand congratulations hold on just man three hundred thousand dollars much later daryl took to twitter to reveal that the locker turned out to belong to gutierrez and he'd been in contact with the author he was also nice enough to return some of the artists personal items in one of the most wealth abundant episodes to air bitters renee and cassie nahoda found what looked like a whole museum in their locker as the couple began unloading the treasures they discovered an endless procession of high value pieces that ranged from ornate pottery to a beautiful grandfather clock in mint condition and a set of barack by wallis collectible silver that was easily worth at least two grand along with an oil canvas painting that came with its own self-valuing paperwork stating it was worth eight thousand dollars the collection also included statues model ships artistic flower pots and some of the pieces that came from africa and asia renee was thrilled and stated it was a kind of event someone chased their whole career in the end the locker was valued at fifty thousand dollars minimum which made both renee and his wife cassie speechless by the unbelievable fine thank you for checking this video out and don't forget to smash that like button and also subscribe for new videos every day turn that
