so is Aken really the best town in 2015 my husband and I found the cutest Farm in a town we really didn't know much about and we packed up our horses and dogs and moved to a completely new place we haven't looked back since and time flies when you love where you live hey there welcome back to the channel I'm Lindsay Vance realtor with the living in South Carolina team at real broker if you're considering a move to or from my area or throughout South Carolina my team can definitely help and would love to hear from you today I'm giving you some personal Insight on the 10 reasons why I love living in Akin South Carolina and why you might love it too in fact a lot of the times people say to me well of course you would love aan because you have horses of course but that's not the only reason I've lived on the coast in the mountains and now in this small town so here's why I moved here and why we've stayed I've mentioned this before but a few years ago Southern Living magazine named aen as the South's best small town it was also named as the South's friendliest Town it made second place for South's best food town and second place for the South's best hotel which was awarded to the Willcox now this isn't a coincidence that these are four of the 10 Things I have on my list every single week all year long the calendar in aen is full there is always something to do and it's one of the best things about living here I will mention there's not much of a night life there are some great local spots for that but for the most part everything is happening during the day or over the weekend now I love live music so two of the events are my favorites in aen a the alley or the aen music festival a the alley happens every single Thursday right in downtown from March through October it's free and open to the public and it's pet and family friendly Aon Music Fest over at highfields is pet and family friendly as well and even better pack up your own chairs a cooler and even some snacks and you'll really enjoy it this happens once a month throughout the summer and early fall one thing I say to people who are visiting is that aen is a town for dogs and horses we're just allowed to live here usually they get a chuckle out of that but it's true we are such a dog friendly town and I love it I have dogs myself we have beautiful green spaces to explore like Hitchcock Woods or hopelands Gardens a lot of our restaurants are pet friendly and we even have events that are geared towards dogs and all the pets a few of our unique spots that are dog friendly include la parisen which is the French bakery right downtown they even have a doggy menu and doggy dining area also we have the newest spot which is good girl Brewing Company they have a really cool outdoor space and then this one's quite unique you actually have turn down service for your dog at the Wilcox Hotel you also can hang out in the lobby of the Wilcox with your dog if you're just stopping by for a drink and a bite to eat now if you love dogs and you're shopping downtown you definitely want to stop at downtown dog or Brave friend okay so we talked about dogs we might as well talk about horses cuz like I said they basically Run This Town we have horses everywhere from painted statues throughout town to some of our street signs with horse heads on them and even an equestrian Crossing signal where horses and Riders can safely cross Whiskey Road to ride into Hitchcock Woods which is the largest privately owned Urban forest in the United States what a horse heaven now you don't have to have horses just if you love them there are plenty of things to do there are some regular horse shows and events happening throughout the year in aen but we have some really cool annual Traditions that I love including spring and fall steeple chase the H show in the woods which has been going on for more than a hundred years blessing of the hounds to Mark the start of the fox hunting season and the Christmas parade that's right we have a Christmas parade that's dedicated just to horses and dogs let's talk about proximity to some larger cities now I rarely find myself leaving aen to need something other than really an airport and we're lucky we're pretty close to Augusta Georgia which can be anywhere from about 30 to 40 minutes from aen or up to Columbia South Carolina which is just under an hour both of those airports are super easy to get in and out of also if you're needing something that is not in aen you just have a short drive to either of those cities to get those amenities while it's really convenient to be close by to those big cities it's also really nice to come back to your small town easygoing life while we're on the topic of this is one of the best things about Ain is it's so Central you can be anywhere within 2 to 3 hours to some beautiful beaches or even the Blue Ridge Mountains you can also check out some of the Lakes throughout the state or if you need to get to a Metro maybe Charlotte or Atlanta it's again 2 to 3 hours to pretty much everywhere it really is the perfect spot for a weekend getaway or even just an overnight St day some of the favorite places we love to visit are either Charleston South Carolina or Savannah Georgia we can get there in just about 2 hours and 20 minutes they both have amazing places to eat the best history and cool places to explore it's pretty much a given when you're in the South to have that southern hospitality and kindness but when it comes to aen we're a little bit different we are one of the most friendly towns I've ever been in whether you're just visiting maybe you're new here or you've been a lifelong resident you're always going to find a happy smile and a helping hand I promise you that not often will you find someone in aen that is from here but if you do they're going to have some really cool stories otherwise everyone here is from all over so they want the same thing as you to be welcomed and make new friends in fact you might even be in line at the coffee shop or over at the farmers market strolling around and you're going to strike up a conversation with someone and even realize how small of a world Aken is this town is steeped in Rich history with preserved landmarks and iconic stories around every corner this brings us into my next favorite thing about aen is the historical charm my husband and I spent almost an entire day in the Aken County Historical Museum learning about Ain and the winter Colony all of the museums in aen are open to the public and free to explore this is so cool and a great way to get to know the history you can also jump on the trolley tour which leaves every Saturday morning from The aan Visitor Center and train museum if you're looking for something a little more active check out the Pedigo Bike Tour this is cool because you actually go through the historic district of aen which is on our iconic dirt road did you know aen has more than 30 houses and properties that are on the national register of historic places I mean how cool is that you have to get into history when you live here even though we are a small town the food and dining options in the area are amazing I usually tell people if you're dining in downtown you really can't go wrong with any of the restaurants most of these places are going to be locally owned small businesses which is also really cool to support local but even better some of them change their menu often so every time you go to dine there's something different another thing to note about downtown and one of my favorites is the alley Tap Room there are more than 48 taps with beer and other beverages Now They don't serve food but this is a great spot to just enjoy while you're waiting for your table then if you're in the South aen area most of these places to eat are going to be fast food restaurants chain restaurants but we do have some really great local spots on the south end as well and if you're looking for that Mom and Pop place to eat you can't forget to check out the track kitchen which is right in the historic district of downtown or to the blue top grill over in granitville as some locals these will be favorites whether you're craving some southern comfort food that fresh farm to table or a unique Cuisine there really is something for everyone in aen and don't forget to stop by the farmers market for some of that great fresh local produce another reason why I love living in achen is the small town Vibes it's a place where you can really slow down relax and enjoy life I usually tell people that we're not much of a work for the weekend type Town Aken perfectly captures that small town charm it has a quaint downtown area unique boutiques some of the greatest small businesses and friendly locals it's easy to see why so many people fall in love with this place last but certainly not least the real estate market in aen is as unique as the town itself when I first moved here I did not have an intention of getting in a career in real estate but with the unique charm of Ain and its interesting real estate I was hooked especially being able to help fellow equestrians find the perfect horse property you really have to be here to check it out for yourself you have places like historic homes and Charming Cottages to Modern Estates and equestrian properties don't forget about single family traditional style neighborhoods and Easy Living Like town homes or even Loft living over the shops downtown I can pretty much guarantee there is something for every taste and budget my favorite place to show off that unique real estate market is downtown on the dirt roads this area is known as the historic district or also the horse District it's really cool you have to check it out my absolute favorite local saying is if you're lucky enough to live in Akin you're lucky enough and I can agree with this more do you live here or have you stopped by for a visit what is your favorite thing about this charming Town thanks so much for tuning in today and letting me share the reasons why I love living in aen South Carolina I look forward to seeing you next time I'm Lindsay Vance and this is living in South Carolina
