10 New Home Automation Ideas My Wife LOVES!

you guys know that i'm always setting up new automation ideas but i did something i might regret i told my wife ally that i would set up any automations she wants and look at this list i made a huge tiny mistake actually there are a lot of really good ideas on here some of them easy and some of them a bit more challenging but i like that they're all practical so let's get started all right so let's take a look at the first thing on this list okay this is going to be challenging so our daughter is really good at playing the piano for her age but every once in a while it sounds a bit off so we'll walk over to the piano to check it out and guess what the lights are off no wonder it sounds weird she can barely read the notes on the page time to fix it this is challenging because i cannot put a motion sensor in here because you sit still playing the piano but then i thought what about a vibration sensor to detect if someone is playing so i attached a multi-purpose sensor on the bottom of the piano that can detect vibration and it works playing any key will cause the vibration sensor to detect it now all i had to do was set up an automation that turns on the smart light switch when it detects a vibration [Applause] wait what that's awesome i can't believe how great this thing is also i set up another automation to turn off the lights when no vibration is detected for five minutes but i'm not done just yet i wanted to do something a little extra since my daughter is supposed to practice every day i can create a third automation to remind her to play if she hasn't yet so every night if the vibration sensor hasn't detected movement for the last three hours it will send an announcement on the echoes time to practice the piano okay on to the next automation the robot vacuum okay so this might be even more challenging our robot vacuum is automated to clean when everyone leaves the house and this works great and my wife loves the automation but what she wrote down is what if at least one of us is always home it could be days before our robot vacuum cleans our house so i need to come up with a solution first i had to figure out how to track when the robot vacuum last cleaned and to do that i store the date and time when the robot vacuum cleans i already had an automation starting the robot vacuum so i just added to that then every day i have the automation check to see if it's been over three days since the robot vacuum last ran if so it will send an actionable push notification to my wife's phone that notification will have a button she can press to start the robot vacuum right there this keeps it really easy and not annoying because if the robot vacuum started automatically it could start at an inconvenient time this avoids all of that and gets a thumbs up from ali alright so let's see what we have next okay yeah this should be easy so our youngest is being potty trained right now and sometimes she needs help in the bathroom but that could be across the house and when she's yelling for help we might not hear it so i think i have a solution a smart button she can press that will announce on all the echo speakers she needs help mom i need help in the kids bathroom this is just a simple amazon routine so it's really easy to set up right now all the buttons do the same thing but maybe in the future i'll add some more functionality for different buttons like bring me some toilet paper come to think about it i might want that for my bathroom someone bring dad toilet paper in his bathroom i don't want to do that i'll die from the smell i will give a dollar to whoever brings me toilet paper okay fine oh speaking of going potty this next one is for our other creature in our house luna and she already has a reminder to go potty using the motion sensor in her doggy door it works great my wife likes it but what if luna ignores it and never ends up going outside my wife wants a really easy way to know when was the last time luna went out the doggy door to do this i created an automation that saves the day and time the motion sensor in the doggy door detects motion then i display the date and some dynamic text in the home assistant app that lets my wife know how long ago it was i added the dog icon for some style points too bad the dog icon is more cute than luna oh well what can you do okay this next automation seems easy on the surface but there is more to it so ali wants a reminder to open up their windows or sliding back door if the temperature is nicer outside than it is inside as the weather is starting to warm up it can get a little stuffy in here so if the temperature is cooler outside than inside we should open up a window and not turn on the ac maybe one day we'll have that auto opening windows we saw at ces but for now we'll have to do it ourselves but i do not want this automation to run in the winter when we want our house warm or if we're away from the house so here's what i set up if our hvac system is in cool and not heating mode then i know it's not winter time and it's okay to run the automation also i make sure to check that our phones are connected to the wi-fi if all that's true and the temperature outside is cooler than it is inside it will send a notification to our phones now my wife doesn't have to keep a close eye on the temperature outside to see when to open up the windows it's great alright this next automation is pretty simple but how to do it that's the question she wants an easy way to turn off all the lights in the house when she's going to bed early we already have an automation at midnight that will turn off all the lights but what if she's going to bed sooner i thought about using the contact sensor to shut everything off when closing our bedroom doors but that might backfire and happen when we don't want it to leaving one of us in the dark if i made a smart button to shut everything off it could be easily exploited by the kids i can't put that much power in their tiny little hands so what i ended up doing was putting a little nfc tag on her nightstand that she can scan on her phone and turn off all the lights it's really simple solution because it doesn't run out of batteries and my kids can't use it it's a win-win these next couple of requests are really easy and honestly i should have done this a long time ago but i didn't know they were needed because i'm not an early bird all she wanted was the kitchen pendant lights to be on before anyone goes into the kitchen since it's dark in the morning and the kids will be less likely to wake us if the lights are on for breakfast these hue pendant lights can actually do warm and cool whites so they're pretty awesome she also wanted a reminder to go off every weekday morning to remind our daughter to get ready for school time to get dressed for school you have to leave in 15 minutes now my smart home is taking care of my kids and parenting while i'm asleep i love it okay this next one is a really good one when ali is leaving and i'm staying at home watching the kids it can be dangerous not because of nerf guns wrestling or eating a lot of candy all of which will probably happen but because of the car backing up every once in a while my kids will want to run out the door and say goodbye mix out with a car backing up and it's scary since we already have bright led lights that turn on anytime someone walks into the garage we thought we could use those so i made an automation to flash those lights on and off when the door to the house opens and the garage door is open as well that way we can get a quick visual alert to be careful if we're in the car all right all done awesome thank you if you want to make your family happy just ask them what kind of automations you could make for them these automations only took me a few minutes to make and they've really helped out ali around the house so if you want to make your spouse happy just ask them what automations you can make for them wait what's this just a few more things more things around the house you know what forget everything i just said i won't even open up that door this list brushing the
