today we'll take a look at some of the largest sports scandals to ever take place number 10 the Black Sox scandal yes I know it's White Sox but the Black Sox scandal was a major league baseball match-fixing incident in which eight members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of intentionally losing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds they did this because of gambling money the fallout from this scandal resulted in the appointment of judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis as the first Commissioner of baseball granting him absolute control over the sport in order to restore its integrity despite acquittals in a public trial in 1921 judge Landis permanently banned all eight men from professional baseball which includes banishment from post career honors such as consideration for the Baseball Hall of Fame despite requests for reinstatement and the decades that followed particularly for Shoeless Joe Jackson the band remains to this day even though they were acquitted in court Landis argued that they had broken the rules of baseball and they had broken the spirit of baseball and for baseball to ever regain the public support they must be permanently banned from organized baseball baseball number nine Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan On January 6 1994 Harding's main team competitor for the sport of Figure Skating Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by an assailant Shane stant after a practice session at the 1994 US Figure Skating Championships in Detroit Harding's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and her bodyguard Shaun Eckhart hired Stan's to break Carrigan's right leg so she would be unable to compete at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer after failing to find Kerrigan at her training rink in Massachusetts State followed her to Detroit when she stepped off the ice after a practice session at Cobo Arena and walked behind a nearby curtain into a corridor Fayette struck her on the thigh a few inches above the knee with an ASP telescopic baton her leg was only bruised not broken but the injury forced her to withdraw from the national championship harding won that event and she and Kerrigan were both selected for the 1994 Olympic team Harding finished eighth in Lillehammer while Kerrigan I then fully recovered from the injury won the silver medal the attack on Cara and the news of Harding's alleged involvement led to a media frenzy on February 1st 1994 Gillooly accepted a plea bargain in exchange for his testimony against Harding Gillooly stant Eckhart and a getaway car driver Derrick Smith all serves time in prison for the attack Eckhart was sentenced to 18 months in prison for racketeering but was released four months early Harding avoided prosecution and a possible jail sentence by pleading guilty on March 16th to conspiring to hinder prosecution of the attackers she received three years probation 500 hours of community service and a hundred and sixty thousand dollar fine she was also forced to withdraw from the 1994 World Figure Skating championship and resigned from the United States Figure Skating Association the usfsa stripped her over 1994 US Championship title and banned her for life from participating in usfsa run events as either a skater or a coach number eight Sochi Winter Olympics Russian doping scandal doping in Russian sports is a significant issue because it's government sponsored cheating Russia had the most Olympic medals stripped for doping violations at 37 triple the number of the second country from 2011 to 2015 more than a thousand Russian competitors in various summer winter and Paralympic sports benefited from a massive cover-up media attention began growing in December 2014 when a German broadcaster reported on state-sponsored doping in Russia comparing it to doping in East Germany in 2015 the world anti-doping agency published a report and the International Association of Athletics Federations suspended Russia indefinitely from the world track and field events the United Kingdom anti-doping agency later assisted world anti-doping agency with testing in Russia in 2016 they reported they were unable to fully carry out their work and noted intimidation by armed Federal Security Service after a Russian former lab director made allegations about the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi wada commissioned an independent investigation led by Richard McClaren MacLaren's investigation found corroborating evidence concluding a report published in 2016 that the Ministry of sport and the FSB had operated a state-directed fail-safe system using the disappearing positive test methodology from at least 2011 to August 2015 in response to these findings wada announced that the russian athletes would be banned from the 2016 Summer Olympics the International Olympic Committee that recommendation stating that the IOC in each Sports International Federation would make decisions on each athletes individual basis on August 4th 2016 one day prior to the opening ceremony 270 athletes were cleared for competition while 167 were removed because of doping the International Paralympic Committee voted to unanimously ban the entire Russian team from the 2016 Paralympics number 7 Floyd Landis doping in July of 2006 the phonic cycling team announced a urine sample submitted by Floyd Landis tested positive for an unusually high ratio of the hormone testosterone in the 2006 Tour de France Landis denied doping and placed faith in a test using his backup sample file next stated that he would be dismissed should the backup sample also test positive and it did Landis was suspended from professional cycling and dismissed from his team Landis's personal physician later disclosed that the test had found three times the testosterone of a normal human being in 2007 Landis was found guilty of doping by a two-to-one vote on the Hearing Committee Landis was banned from the sport for two years stated retro actively to January 2007 Landis appealed the decision of the committee to the Court of Arbitration for sport the decision was announced in June 30th 2008 with the result of the conviction and ban were upheld Landis reached an agreement with federal prosecutors over allegations that he fraudulently solicited donations for a Defense Fund that he set up to fight doping charges two million dollars worth of illegally acquired money number six Tiger Woods Tiger Woods was one of the greatest golfers of all time in 2010 Woods his career began to take a dive he returned to competition in April at the 2010 Masters where he finished in a tie for 4th he followed the Masters with poor showings at the Quail Hollow Championship and the player championship his performance continued to suffer in 2011 taking its toll on his ranking after falling the number seven in the world in March would jiz performance would continue to decline however until he would fade away into obscurity most believed it's due to the conflict with his own wife and his own infidelity that shook woods and altered his game number five the Penn State child sex abuse scandal the Penn State child sex abuse scandal is an incident in which Jerry Sandusky a former assistant football coach was charged and convicted of multiple counts of sexual abuse of children Sandusky had located in his victims through his charity organization the second mile there were also several Penn State University officials who were implicated because their actions were questionable in terms of whether they met ethical moral or legal applications and reporting any of the suspected abuse Sandusky's abuses may have begun as early as the 1970s but he was charged with abuse that occurred between 1994 and 2009 three school officials were charged with perjury obstruction of justice and failure to report suspected child abuse Sandusky's criminal trial began in 2012 he maintained his innocence of the 52 charges four were dropped leaving 48 On June 22nd 2012 Sandusky was convicted to 45 counts of sexual abuse he was sentenced on October 9th 2012 to a minimum of 30 years in a maximum of 60 years in prison number 4 deflate gate deflate gate was a National Football League controversy involving the allegation that the New England Patriots deliberately under-inflated footballs used in their victory against the Indianapolis Colts in the American Football Conference championship game of the 2014-2015 NFL playoffs the controversy resulted in the Patriots quarterback Tom Brady being suspended for four games and the team being fined a million dollars like that's any money to the Patriots and losing two draft picks for his alleged part in the scandal Tom Brady was originally suspended by the league for four games of the 2015 regular season which was upheld by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and an internal appeal the matter moved to federal court for Judge Richard M Burman vacated Goodell four-game suspension of Brady allowing Brady to resume his playing duties for the entirety of the 2015 season however following the conclusion of the season the second US Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated Brady's four-game suspension which became effective for the 2016 regular season Brady accepted the suspension after losing a request for a rehearing of course this season saw the NFL changed the process for monitoring football pressure number three Pete Rose gambling Pete Rose is arguably one of the greatest baseball players of all time but in 1989 Rose was informally questioned by the Commissioner of baseball that at this point in time he was betting against his own team a summary was delivered that speculated that Rose had been gambling in 1985 and 1986 which compiled a day-to-day account of Rose's a betting on baseball games the report documented his alleged bets on 52 games in 1987 on his own team were rows wagered a minimum of $10,000 a day the report says that no evidence was discovered that Rose bet against his own team the problem with rose betting on baseball is that because he was the manager he could control the outcome of the games making decisions that could enhance his chances of winning the bets and jeopardizing the integrity of the game this is kind of a controversy because it's never been proved that Rose fed against his own team only for it Rose was banned from the Baseball Hall of Fame and has still not been allowed to enter Rosa's petitioned the Hall of Fame to prevent his name to be submitted for induction because he agreed to a lifetime baseball ban but it wasn't part of the deal that he'd be prevented from the Hall of Fame number two Lance Armstrong for much of his career Armstrong faced persistent allegations of doping he denied all of these allegations until January 2013 a series of emails in a series of doping tests would prove that Armstrong had been doping for almost every single victory he'd won Armstrong is considered one of the greatest cheaters in sports history number one Spain's cheating at the 2000 para Olympic Games just pathetic the 2000 summer's Paralympics in Sydney which had already seen controversy with numerous positive drug tests would be the venue for the most scandalous events in the sports history as Spain was stripped of their intellectual disability basketball gold medals shortly after the games closed a member of the victorious team in an undercover journalist revealed to the Spanish business magazine capital that most of his colleagues had not undergone medical tests to ensure they had a disability the IPC investigated the claims and felt that the required mental tests were not conducted and that when the tests were conducted a 10 out of 12 players were not disabled so Spain cheated against disabled people just so they could win a gold medal pathetic well I hope you
