majesty to attract us to him nothing in his appearance that we should desire him isaiah 53 verse 2 matthew 26 48 amplified bible now the betrayer had given them a sign saying whomever i kiss he is the in reality after he rose from the tomb mary magdalene mistakes him as a gardener after saying this she turned around and saw jesus standing there but she did not know that it was jesus 15. jesus said to her woman why are you crying for whom are you looking supposing that he was a gardener she replied sir if you were the one who has carried him away from here tell me where you have put him and i will take him away 16. jesus said to her mary she turned and said to him in hebrew rabbani which means teacher 17 jesus said to her do not hold me for i have not yet ascended to the father but go to my brothers and tell them i am ascending to my father and your father and to my god and your god john 20 verses 14 to 17. number two jesus gets his name from an angel angel gabriel appeared to a virgin named mary who was engaged to joseph a descendant of king david in the galilee town of nazareth the angel went to her and said greetings you who are highly favored the lord is with you mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be but the angel said to her do not be afraid mary you have found favor with god he would not be your typical youngster he would be known as the son of the most high you will conceive and give birth to a son and you were to call him jesus he will be great and will be called the son of the most high the lord god will give him the throne of his father david and he will reign over jacob's descendants forever his kingdom will never end matthew 26 verses 31-33 as a result jesus would be the fulfillment of the old testament prophecies about the future son of david the messiah who would reign forever 2 samuel 7 verses 12 to 16 american standard version when thy days are fulfilled and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers i will set up thy seed after thee that shall proceed out of thy bowels and i will establish his kingdom he shall build a house for my name and i will establish the throne of his kingdoms forever i will be his father and he shall be my son if he commit inequity i will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men but my lovingkindness shall not depart from him as i took it from saul whom i put away before thee and thy house and thy kingdom shall be made sure for ever before thee thy throne shall be established forever number three jesus's last name wasn't christ we hear jesus christ so frequently that it's easy to believe it's jesus's surname it isn't people in first century palestine did not have surnames others were recognized by referring to their parents they said is this not jesus the son of joseph whose father and mother we know how can he now say i came down from heaven john 6 42 christ comes from the greek for christos which means anointed one number four jesus frequently showed emotion jesus frequently demonstrated emotion mainly current depictions of jesus depicts him as an emotionless otherworldly person however the gospel writers show us a passionate savior we see jesus throughout the gospels cry luke 19 verses 41-44 amplified bible as he approached jerusalem he saw the city and wept over it and the spiritual ignorance of its people saying if only you had known on this day of salvation even you the things which make for peace and on which peace depends but now they have been hidden from your eyes for a time of siege is coming when your enemies will put up a barricade with pointed stakes against you and surround you with armies and hem you in on every side and they will level you to the ground you jerusalem and your children within you they will not leave in you one stone on another all because you did not come progressively to recognize from observation and personal experience the time of your visitation when god was gracious toward you and offered you salvation we also witnessed jesus turned tables jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there he overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves it is written he said to them my house will be called the house of prayer but you are making it a den of robbers matthew 21 verses 12 to why did jesus express emotion here the temple had devolved into a site of materialism and commercialism rather than worship of the one true living god when solomon dedicated the temple he prayed that god would hear his people's prayers from the temple and forgive heal defend and bless them however these thieves were robbing the people and reaping a financial benefit by utilizing god's house jesus is also compassionate jesus went through all the towns and villages teaching in their synagogues proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness when he saw the crowds he had compassion on them because they were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd matthew 9 verses 35 to 37 matthew stresses jesus's ministry of teaching preaching healing throughout the communities as he did previously jesus was deeply concerned with the spiritual state of the people they had no spiritual direction they were sheep in search of a shepherd number five jesus fasted for forty days only moses elijah and jesus fasted for forty days in the bible depending on how well once hydrated severe starvation begins between 35 to 40 days the devil tempted christ in the desert during his fasting matthew 4 verses 1 to 4 amplified bible then jesus was led by the holy spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil after he had gone without food for 40 days and 40 nights he became hungry and the tempter came and said to him if you are the son of god command that these stones become bread but jesus replied it is written and forever remains written man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes out of the mouth of god number six jesus family tree has some pretty shady characters when entering the world jesus chose a pretty interesting family line his lineage had some such shady characters as david who had a man killed to cover up an adulterous affair solomon married 700 women and turned his heart away from the lord rehoboam did evil because he had not set his heart on seeking the lord second chronicles 12 14 abijah ebisha committed all the sins his father had done before him 1 kings 15 3 amplified bible he walked in all the sins of idol worship that his father rehoboam committed before him and his heart was not entirely devoted to the lord his god like the heart of his father forefather david jacob habitual schemer judah collaborated with his brothers to sell the youngest sibling into slavery rehab a prostitute number seven jesus had several half-siblings the gospel tells us that jesus had brothers matthew 12 46 amplified bible while he was still talking to the crowds it happened that his mother and brothers stood outside asking to speak to him matthew even tells us the brother's names and mentions his sisters isn't this the carpenter's son isn't his mother's name mary and aren't his brothers james joseph simon and judas aren't all his sisters with us when did this man get all these things matthew 13 verses 55 to 56 jesus had returned to nazareth to teach in their synagogue but he didn't exactly have a nice welcome home though amazed by his intellect and amazing abilities they were upset when they discovered he was one of them we know his family how did this ordinary man acquire such remarkable wisdom and power he's no better than the rest of us and because of their skepticism he did not perform many miracles there number eight bethlehem means house of bread bethlehem translates as house of bread bethlehem is the name of the town where jesus is born this is two terms in hebrew beth means home and lehem means flower it's difficult not to notice the relevance here not only did the prophet micah predict that the messiah would be born in bethlehem but jesus referred to himself as the bread of life on numerous occasions john 6 35 then jesus declared i am the bread of life whoever comes to me will never go hungry and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty number nine jesus grew up as a carpenter joseph was a carpenter matthew 13 55 and jesus must have studied the craft because he is also identified as a carpenter by the people in his hometown isn't this the carpenter isn't this mary's son and the brother of james joseph judas and simon aren't his sisters here with us and they took offense at him mark 6 verse 3. tekten is a greek word that signifies artisan or craftsman this does not necessarily imply that joseph would have made items out of wood which would have been very expensive he could have worked as a stonemason number 10 jesus talked theology with the pharisees as a child luke provides a soul glimpse of jesus throughout his teens in the return journey from passover in jerusalem joseph and mary become separated from jesus when they realize jesus is absent they race back to the ancient city he is not found for three days luke 2 verse 46 and when they do find him he isn't terrified or upset like a usual child what they uncover astounds them after three days they found him in the temple courts sitting among the teachers listening to them and asking them questions everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers when his parents saw him they were astonished his mother said to him son why have you treated us like this your father and i have been anxiously searching for you why were you searching for me he asked didn't you know i had to be in my father's house luke 2 verse 46 to 49 one more fact jesus's ministry only lasted three and a half years john's gospel tells us that jesus attended at least three passover feasts during his ministry there's one mentioned in john 2 verse 13. when it was almost time for the jewish passover many went up from the country to jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the passover they kept looking for jesus and as they stood in the temple courts they asked one another what do you think isn't he coming to the festival at all but the chief priests and the pharisees had given orders that anyone who found out where jesus was should report it so that they might arrest him john 11 verses 55 to 57 this suggests that his ministry lasted at least two years but there could have been further passover festivities that were unnoticed we do know that several time-consuming events would have occurred before to their first passover his ministry would have taken him all over judea john performed his baptism in the wilderness he fasted for 40 days and was tempted he summoned his disciples he began his preaching ministry with his family and disciples he traveled to capernaum all of this would have amounted to several months of ministry not to mention the 40 days between christ's resurrected body and his ascension in the end some believe jesus's mission lasted only approximately three and a half years an incredibly short time to change the world you
