it's coming soon to a television set near you an incredibly Advanced video game system are you ready for these amazing graphics and vibrant colors can you handle the speed and the power sitting for stereo sound and for five players you decide before September because it's coming Turbo turbo 16 the higher higher sold separately [Music] ah the turbo Graphics 16. this gaming console may have flown under the radar for many players during a day but it holds a treasure Trove of gaming experiences waiting to be discovered if you've never played this system it was originally released in Japan as the PC engine in 1987 but it took two years for the localization team to make the turbo Graphics 16 with its redesigned console shell this console is the result of the partnership between NEC Corporation and Hudson soft as they attempted to carve their own path in the highly competitive console Market of the time the turbo Graphics 16 is really a neat system one of the things that separated it from its competition were the use of hue cards which were small credit card size cartridges that allowed for compact game storage not long after the system launched it would get a CD add-on peripheral but they would still release for Hue cards for most of its life and if you're anything like me before I started playing this system you might be looking for what is a good starting point for getting into this system and that is at the very heart of what makes this 10 essential games list these are games that'll give you a starting point for exploration of this system rather than definitively represent the absolute best games on the system this list is the results of my own personal preferences as well as what others said were good games to experience on the TurboGrafx 16. let's go ahead and take a look [Music] thank you kicking things off of the racing game I decided to go with final lap twin as an essential game because not only is it an excellent racing game for the system but it's also very unique in terms of racing games from this time period first I am a fan of these old school raster Style Racing Games especially when they're done right this reminds me of something like outrun or pull position where this game differentiates itself for me is the fact that it has a story mode which is almost unheard of at this time period the story mode revolves around a young driver who desires to live up to the reputation of his racing champion father you'll travel around on the world map meeting Small Time Racers and you must race your car to earn money that you'll spend on upgrading your car in a sense it's a racing game with role-playing game elements added to it now this is the only game to have a story mode to it but I think it's done well to an extreme in this version and would definitely recommend it if you have a turbo Graphics 16 console the story mode will keep you engaged as a single player but if you have a second player you can also race against your friends as well and that's always a fun time [Music] foreign if I had to pick what I would say to be the number one genre for this system it has to be side-scrolling Shooters there's just something about the TurboGrafx 16 Hardware that really makes side-scrolling Shooters perform extremely well on this system this example here is air Zonk this game was an attempt to Rebrand the system's mascot Bonk into something a lot more cool to better compete with Nintendo and Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis this game received more of a positive reception when it first came out getting around a 7 or 8 out of 10 but it definitely has gained a cult status following as this game is very well done in terms of a side-scrolling shooter it's simple enough for you to pick up and has a challenge there for you to master as you get through the game but with its different difficulty settings I feel like this is one of the most accessible side-scrolling Shooters of this time period visually the game is astounding and I think the art style holds up very well the soundtrack is also cooking as well I would definitely give this one a pick up if you can even if you're not that big of a fan of side-scrolling Shooters this one could appeal to foreign [Music] games on the TurboGrafx 16 are a bit of a rarity which makes it all the more special when you find one that is really good to play this is newtopia 2 which came out in 1991 for the turbo graphics and I'm going to recommend nootopia 2 over the first one mainly because of how it plays but first off this is an action adventure role-playing game and if you can tell from the gameplay footage it is basically a Legend of Zelda clone of the time period you take control of a young boy you get a sword and then you have to go around and defeat enemies on the map and yes they even have the annoying enemy creatures in the sea that'll fire projectiles at you when I first played this for the ultimate TurboGrafx 16 review I could not put it down and I dumped a few hours into this game just exploring the environment and then Consulting a strategy guide to get through the story overall for me personally it did not disappoint it was like like playing a brand new Zelda fan adventure but that's because I didn't grow up with this system and I didn't play it until years later I definitely appreciate the second one over the first for having the ability to attack in eight different directions instead of four you have no idea how many times in the first one I've died because an enemy quartered me in a place I really couldn't attack him well all of that unfair frustration was removed in the second version and they just tweaked the gameplay just enough to make it perfect for me I'd give this one around a nine and a half out of ten and definitely recommend it if you want a role-playing game experience on the turbo graphics 16. [Music] foreign [Music] the legendary ax launched with the system in 1989 here in North America and is a horizontal platform game where you take control of gogon a barbarian whose girlfriend has been kidnapped by The Cult of jagu you will work through six platforming levels armed with only your legendary ax to defeat jagu and his minions as well as rescue your girlfriend as you work through the game you'll level up your strength meter which determines how much damage is dealt from the ax to your enemies foreign [Music] in terms of multiplayer fun I don't think you can go wrong with any entry in the Bomberman series the one I'm showing here is Bomberman 93 because that just happens to be what I have in my collection but any of them I don't think can go wrong with in the game you work your way around this maze-like stage clearing out obstacles and defeating enemies with your bombs that you lay on the ground although you'll have to be wary of your own Friendly Fire and throughout each level you can gain some power-ups including the ability to move faster or lay more bombs but where most the fun comes for me is in the game's multiplayer I really had a lot of fun back in the day playing this game and every once in a while I'll still bust it out as it plays very well on the turbo graphics and I feel like this could be a good introduction to someone who's never played the turbo Graphics 16 before because they should be familiar with this game if they've played it on another console so get ready to bust out that turbo tap and bombs away [Music] foreign [Music] shooter on this list is r-type this is a game I fell in love with on the Super Nintendo despite its technical glitches on that system I really had a lot of fun playing through that game and at one point I could get through it on its Max difficulty settings but even uneasy this game can be a bear to get through on the turbo Graphics it doesn't perform RK perfect and there is some slowdown and glitches every now and again but overall it does perform very well on the system and I had a lot of fun going back to it on here I prefer this version of r-type over the Master System Home Port that was around the same time and really this is about the only way then that you can play the original experience aside from getting an arcade board so this is a definite recommendation for me as an essential for your collection but I will note you may be frustrated with the difficulty settings but there is a cheat code you can put in at the beginning to get more lives if you are so inclined [Music] thank you foreign [Music] Spirit as a constant recommendation from others to me to play on the turbo Graphics 16. in fact the last time I played this game personally was when I did it in the live stream after it was requested a few times in the live chat in this game you play as a ninja or more than one ninja as you'll see in the gameplay here as you work your way through seven varying stages each one beginning with the players slashing their way through the end until they confront a level boss you start out with your slashing Katana attack but you can also upgrade to get other abilities as you go through the only criticism I have of this game other than its high difficulty is the fact that sometimes especially when you have a lot of characters on screen it's hard to tell which one is you I will say the first time I played this it didn't really leave a good impression but the more I came back to it the more I started enjoying it more and more so the experience of this game may be a bit of an acquired taste but one I think that everyone should have if they have a turbo graphics 16. [Music] thank you as I mentioned earlier Bonk was the original system mascot for the turbographic 16 and this was at a time where in the early 90s every company including console manufacturer were trying to come up with the cutest little mascot for their system to help sell it I don't know what led NEC and Hudson soft to choose a giant baby uh caveman baby at that but hey here we go but these games are very well designed Platformers and one that I think that a lot of people will enjoy as this game is probably the most accessible to the widest variety of players in this game your primary attacks will be jumping on enemies and using your head in more ways than one but my least favorite attack in this game is the headbutt which is very limited in range and most the time the enemies end up hitting me instead however if you turn on the turbo function of your turbo pad when you jump in the air you can spin and Float past certain obstacles I bring that up because it took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to learn that move when I was playing through this game the first time now to be perfectly honest you don't have to play through just the first game if you pick any one of the three u-card games that were released for the turbo Graphics 16 I think you're gonna have a good experience [Music] I debated longer than I should have about including Splatterhouse on this 10 essential games list personally this is not a game that I have enjoyed more than any other on the system but it is probably one of the most recommended games to play on the system from every other source I look at including people when I asked water 10 essential games to include on this list I think the biggest draw is just the uniqueness of this game you play a hockey mask wearing psychopath wielding a machete I wonder if that's supposed to be referencing something although you'll see in this version that I'm playing for the North American System his hockey mask is turned pink for some reason I'm assuming to avoid copyright reasons but it could also be one of the many changes they made to this game's North American release by toning down the gore and the horror aspect in the end it makes this list for me because this is the only side-scrolling beat-em-up game that I have included in this list if you've never played this game before it is kind of a treat especially if you're a fan of those 80 slash or horror movies but if you grab the Japanese version for the PC engine the gore is cranked up a bit more and the censorship is less evident either way I'd say this game is at least worth a try foreign [Music] and last but not least I would recommend blazing lasers for the TurboGrafx 16 as an essential as this is probably one of my favorite games on the system in this game you take control of the gunhead advanced Starfighter as you try to defend your Galaxy against the enemy space Armada called the dark Squadron when I started collecting for the turbo Graphics 16 this is one that was always on my radar but was kind of like ah maybe if I get to it kind of game but once I plugged it into my system this is one I kept in for a couple of weeks trying to get through this entire game coming back to it again and again I was addicted to it and if I had gotten this game back in 1989 with my Turbo Graphics 16 the year that it launched this would have been the game I would have tatted to my friend since the reason why they need to get a TurboGrafx 16 as well this game is a vertically scrolling shooter and one of the things I like about this one is that if your ship gets hit once it doesn't automatically get destroyed and you have to be sent back to the beginning or a checkpoint but instead you can have shields that will disappear or it will downgrade your weapon before actually making you go back I will note there are a few times in the game where I felt like if my weapon got degraded throughout the gameplay it would actually be worse than just if I died but overall I think that's a minor criticism considering how well this game is presented the music and sound effects are very well done and the gameplay controls are tight and responsive everything you want to see from a game in this genre [Music] and well there you have it those are my picks for the 10 essential games I feel everyone who wants to experience the turbo Graphics should play on the system and even though the library is very limited on the turbo Graphics 16 especially compared to its contemporaries there are some games on this system that are definitely worth looking into before we go let me know what games I covered on the list that you also enjoyed on the system and of course let me know if there are any games that I missed that I definitely have to go back and play and possibly include if I did a part two to this video I said that it's gonna wrap things up for now thank you so much for watching and I will see you in the next one if you like this video and you'd like
