do you ever purchase interesting goodies at the thrift store with the best of intentions but then never actually use them well I've been doing some major organizing in my garage and storage room and have discovered a number of those forgotten Treasures so I challenged myself to use 10 of them in today's video and transform them into beautiful and useful Decor that I would use in my own home so if you want to give Second Life to some of your neglected items let's get started while cleaning out my storage room I came across this short chippy spindle that was far too cute to throw out it was pretty small on its own so I decided to attach it to a little wood box from my stash I marked the center point on the side of the box and then drilled a small hole in that spot then I drilled a hole in the center of the base of the chippy spindle I put wood glue into both holes and then used a small dowel rod in the holes to join the two pieces together I felt this would make it sturdier than just gluing it alone then I repeated the process drilling a small hole in the top of the spindle and in the base of a resin bird miter shears work great at cutting dowel rods of all sizes this time I used Gorilla Glue to hold the two pieces together to unify the three pieces I mixed some salt wash with white legtex paint until I reached a brownie batter consistency I brushed this mixture on the bird and the bottom box to give them that chippy look that was already on the spindle I just brushed it sparingly on the spindle itself so that all three pieces would be the same shade of White Once the paint was dry I lightly sanded over a few spots that were heavily textured next I twisted a little angel hair Vine into a circle and used some florist wire to hold it in place then I shoved this circle of Vine into the open box underneath the chippy spindle I bet you know where I'm going with this next I added a little moss in the center of the vine and a few little stems of faux Greenery and hot glued in a couple small bird eggs and then as a Finishing Touch I cut out the top transparent portion of a Dollar Tree butterfly sticker and hot glued that in the bird's nest too [Music] thank you [Music] thank you [Music] next I found this cardboard Monet print and went hunting through my picture frames to find one to fit I found this one with no glass that was just a little bit too small so I traced around the inside and cut the print to fit the frame still had most of its Staples so I was able to insert the print and fold down the Staples to hold it in place to add a little something extra to the picture I took another small frame with no glass or back and cut a scrap piece of the print to fit inside I hot glued the top edge of the print to the frame but I left the bottom open for now I flipped the frame over and hot glued a few paper flowers into the bottom of the frame I think these little sunflowers came from Dollar Tree I also added a few little leaves leaves that I cut off a different faux stem originally I was going to use the frame as is but then I decided it would look better if it was gold and so I used a small paint brush to apply some antique gold ribbon buff to the top and sides of the frame I also added some rub and buff to my small frame then I used Gorilla Glue to attach my small frame directly to my cardboard print I could have used hot glue but with hot glue I would have only had one chance to make sure I placed it exactly where I wanted it [Music] foreign [Music] I came across this metallic covered ceramic vase in my basement and although pretty the silver color just wasn't my style I cut open a nearly empty tube of Loctite Adhesive and used a popsicle stick to spread the adhesive in a v-shape on one side of the vase then I began pressing a variety of different shells into the adhesive it takes a few hours for the adhesive to cure so I had plenty of time to pull shells off and rearrange them as I went once the V shape was covered in shells I applied adhesive to a few additional small shells to layer them in once the Loctite Adhesive was dry I added some caulk to fill in some of the larger gaps between the shells I felt the caulk added additional adhesion to make sure that the shells stayed stuck to the vase once the caulk was dry I mixed up another batch of salt wash and white latex paint and began applying it to the vase I applied it heavily between the shells and just lightly over the shells coming back immediately with the paper towel to wipe most of it off once I was happy with how the paint looked on the shells I applied a heavy coat of the mixture to the rest of the vase once that first layer of paint mixture was dry I mixed some mineral colored chalk paint into the remaining salt wash and white paint mixture I then applied this grayish colored paint to the vase using a stiff stenciling brush I went over the entire vase leaving very little of the white paint showing through then to give it an aged concrete appearance once this paint was dry I used some sandpaper to lightly distress the entire vase [Music] thank you since I had a little bit of the paint and salt wash mixture left over from the shell vase I decided I would use it on this cat figurine but first I wanted to drill a small hole in the cat's back using a special ceramic and glass drill bit once the hole was drilled and the paint was dry I began adding faux stems to the hole you'd be surprised at how many stems you can fit in such a small hole what a fun and easy way to dress up a very simple ceramic figurine [Music] thank you [Music] I'm not really sure what this cabinet's original purpose was but I was not a fan of the mirror on the back so my first task was to take it out once I removed the cardboard backing I was surprised to discover that the mirror wasn't attached to the cabinet in any way I wanted to spray paint the cabinet so first I removed the clips that were holding the glass panes in the doors be sure to put this tiny Hardware in a safe spot so you don't lose it I gave the cabinet a couple coats of black spray paint I'm not a fan of flat spray paint but I love rust-oleum's Ultra matte oddly enough it has a bit of a Sheen to it while the spray paint on the cabinet dried I applied spray adhesive to the back piece of the cabinet and then I care carefully adhered a poster that I had picked up for a couple dollars at the thrift store because the poster was bigger than the cabinet back I lined it up in a pleasing way and then cut away the excess poster then I returned that piece to the back of the cabinet and used a small staple gun to staple around the edges to hold it in place then all I needed to do was to reattach the glass panels and the little handles on the cabinet doors I also left off the top shelf divider so that larger items could be displayed on that top shelf [Music] foreign [Music] I'm not sure what possessed me to buy this frame for a two-tiered tray missing its shelves but it was time to either use it or pitch it so I measured the width and length and cut a scrap piece of wood to fit snugly into the bottom in fact it fits so stunkly that I didn't need to do anything additional to hold it in place it was an older piece of wood so I gave it a light sanding before bringing it inside I could have cut a second piece of wood to put on the top shelf but I wanted to try something different and so I cleaned up this old black cash box and it fit nicely into the top shelf opening I wanted the Box lid to be open and I was able to prop open the lid under the Tray's handle I used some antiquing wax to stain the bottom piece of wood and I used some goo to rub off some paint splatters on the old cash box for additional interest I decided to add a small IOD rub on transfer to the front of the cash box I cut one of the seed packet transfers in half and trimmed the edges I adhered it to the Box by rubbing it with the plastic stick that comes in the package with the transfers then to make it look as if it had always been on the box I went over the transfer especially along the edges with some sandpaper [Music] foreign [Music] this little cabinet was marked as is because two of the drawers were stuck and one was missing its handle I pried out the drawers using a small screwdriver and then used a hammer to remove the two remaining handles although this cabinet appeared to have been hand painted it didn't have any texture to it so it didn't have to be sanded before repainting I gave it two coats of an acrylic enamel blue paint that I had left over from a previous project I wanted to make this cabinet look like a small old Apothecary or spice cabinet so when the paint was dry I distressed it heavily with sandpaper I printed out these labels on regular copy paper in a size to fit the front of each drawer to adhere them I applied a thin even coat of mod podge to the front of the drawer and to the back of the paper and then carefully place the paper onto the front of the drawer smoothing out any wrinkles with my fingers then to make it look even older I roughed up the edges of the paper with some sandpaper and the blade of a utility knife I also roughed up the center of the drawer where the handle would go I found some little wooden knobs in my stash and used Gorilla Glue to attach them to the center of each drawer then I got out my watered-down antiquing wax and with a small paintbrush I applied just the tiniest bit around the edges of the three pieces of paper I used a cloth to immediately dab away any excess wax I also used the watered down antiquing wax to stain the three handles [Music] foreign [Music] I love this little vintage shelf but I never really knew where to put it and I wonder does anyone know was it made for a particular purpose the door was a little warped and starting to come loose so I just went ahead and removed it I'm really loving dark wood again so you've seen me use this restore a finish product a lot lately you just apply it with some very fine steel wool and then wipe it off with a clean rag it does a great job of freshening up old wood and hiding scratches one of the joints was a little loose so I added some wood glue in the crack between the two pieces and weighed it down with a can of paint and let it dry overnight I decided the Shelf would be more practical for me if I didn't reattach the door so I just placed it in the back of the cabinet [Music] thank you [Music] this caned bench was given to me by my sweet neighbor Kayla it's a beautiful piece but had suffered some damage probably caused by one of Kayla's very energetic little boys to repair the very loose joints I re-glued them with wood glue clamped the bench and let it dry overnight the next day I reinforced the joints by filling in any remaining cracks or crevices with dark brown colored Super Glue the next day I cleaned up the wood using you guessed it furniture refinisher and fine steel wool I felt the best option for repairing the seat was to add an upholstered cushion I measured the width and length of the seed and cut a piece of plywood to fit many home improvement stores like Lowe's will cut the wood for you before you leave the store next I applied spray adhesive to a piece of foam and adhered it to the plywood since I was using some leftover foam that I already had I needed to cut a second small piece to completely cover my piece of plywood my foam was pretty thin so I covered it with a thick layer of batting before adding my piece of fabric I purchased a beautiful scrap of cruel fabric at the Habitat Restore for just a couple dollars I lined up my fabric on the cushion flipped it over and began stapling it to the plywood using my electric stapler the trick to getting a professional looking upholstery job is to pull your fabric taut as you continue to staple especially around the corners you also want to make sure that you cut away any extra fabric before stapling down the corners don't fold your corner fabric like a present instead as you're pulling your fabric create small pleats and staple each pleat in place because the bench seat was constructed of caning I didn't have many options for attaching the plywood to the bench the four wood sides were so thick I couldn't use my cordless brad nailer so instead I drilled holes all the way through the wood and then screwed in Long wood screws the real trick was Finding screws that were long enough to go into the plywood but not so long that they would poke through the foam I ended up using 17 wood screws with three on that middle support Bar for a very firm fit [Music] foreign [Music] foreign last week's video I turned a magazine rack into a planter well this week I found another magazine rack but I think I'll do something different with this one I'm pretty sure that at one time this magazine rack had a handle going across the top but it was missing so I just went ahead and cut down the two sides to make it look more like a crate and less like a magazine rack then I used my orbital sander to round off the cut edges to match the other sides to create a unified base coat for the magazine rack I gave it a coat of white zinser primer when the primer was dry I brushed on a coat of rust-oleum's Tate green chalk paint maybe because I've been using a lot of acrylic enamel paint lately but I thought this chalk paint had terrible coverage it took three coats and still looked a little streaky in spots so I decided to give it a really rustic look and distressed it with my orbital sander the green paint dried lighter than I expected so I applied a coat of antiquing wax to give it a Deeper Shade just brushing it on and then wiping off the excess I do really like this color of green so I'll have to use this paint at least one more time and see if I get better coverage on a different piece [Music] foreign [Music] I hope today's video has inspired you to find the potential in your forgotten finds thank you so much for watching and if you enjoyed today's video please consider subscribing so you don't miss any of my future upcycling projects [Music] thank you
