the Olympics are all about friendship sharing and sportsmanship at least that's what they tell us it also turns out that over the years the Olympics have been the source for an incredible amount of drama in extreme cases this drama spills over in a full-blown scandal from corrupt officials and judges to bad behavior by athletes this is a side of the Olympic Games organization officials would like for us to all forget so grab that popcorn because you're going to see some real dirt as always before we start make sure you've subscribed to our Channel and feel free to leave a like and comment when you're done who knows maybe your comment will be featured in one of our upcoming videos cold war on the court the Olympic Games aren't supposed to be about politics Yeah right take for instance the United States and the former Soviet Union for decades the games were seen as a way to show the superiority of socialism or capitalism over the other in 1972 the US and Soviets squared off on the basketball court in Munich for most of the game the Soviets were shocking everyone by winning then with just three seconds left the u.s. got a couple free throws and went ahead by a score of 50 to 49 it looked all done and dusted but then some dodgy refereeing occurred over the next three seconds the Soviets were given three do-overs to try and get the ball all the way down the court each time play was stopped there was no reason given as no fouls occurred and no timeouts remained in the end the Soviets officially won although everyone watching couldn't figure out how in protest the u.s. never claimed their silver medals so as not to validate the sketchy result angel mottos when you get banned for life from a certain sport you know things have gone horribly wrong that's exactly what happened to angel mottos at the 2008 Beijing Games heading into Beijing Mattos was a real force in the sport of Taekwondo after all he'd claimed gold in Sydney so he knew what he was doing things were going generally well for the Cuban martial artists and Matos found himself making it all the way to the bronze medal match then it fella during the match he ended up hurting himself and was allowed a one-minute timeout for medical treatment when the one-minute was up and he didn't return to the match the referee had no choice but to disqualify him and award the win to his opponent that's when things went bad Matos got up and challenged Swedish referee Chuckie er shall bat then to everyone's amazement the Kuban delivered a kick to the face of the official throw in mattresses coach claiming the Swedish Graf was bribed and it's all easy to see why the scandal led to both of them being banned for life boxing gait let's face it judges and officials at the Olympics have a bit of a track record with corruption or making bad calls that leave everyone wondering who is paying them off before you get too upset with that claim just listen to this story about some pretty shady judges at the 1988 Seoul Games in a light middleweight class the overwhelming favorite heading into the games was American boxer Roy Jones jr. Jones cut through every opponent he faced dominating them all and easily making it to the gold medal bout where he faced South Korean Park SI hoon to anyone watching it wasn't even close Jones dominated Park Landing blow after blow round after round onlookers in TV commentary all agreed by the end that Jones had easily outscored his opponent but the judges came back with their verdict Park was declared a winner by three to two everyone was shocked it later turned out some of the judges had been wined dined and bribed by South Korean officials shocking the Romanian slit have you ever been suffering from a cold and taken a couple pills for relief those pills suddenly give you superpowers the ability to run incredibly fast or outperform others now we didn't think so while the Olympic officials seemed to think that such things give competitors an unfair advantage and therefore have been banned this all caused a bit of a scandal at the 2000 Sydney games when Romanian gymnasts aundrea Radu Khan was disqualified after pseudoephedrine was found in her system the Romanian had been suffering from a cold and taken over-the-counter medicine to treat it unfortunately the officials decided the banned substance meant her all-around gold medal should be taken away strangely the Romanians gold and silver the team in vault events were left in place Radek on her coaches and the other gymnasts all protested the decision since they all agreed the cold pills wouldn't have helped in a sport that requires great skill something pseudoephedrine cannot give you in the end she because it was just so over the top before the games a film crew caught the moment after a man had smacked Carrigan's leg in an effort to injure her as the story unfolded it all tied back to Tonya Harding it was later found that Harding's ex-husband and bodyguard had hired a man to injure Kerrigan from Carrigan's cries of yy2 Hardee's near meltdown when her laces came undone during her skate in Lillehammer this was all just too ridiculous in fact most people don't even remember it was ukrainian skater o sana Baiul who won the cold in the end this scandal almost went away then I Tania was released in theaters last year so we all get to relive it again seriously though great movie the flag blunder the Olympics are a major production that require a lot of planning and choreography of course every now and then there are mistakes and slips but some are a bit worse than others at the 2012 London Games officials almost caused an international incident during a soccer match between North Korea and Colombia as part of the competition in Hampton Park Scotland the players on the various teams were shown on the big screen in the stadium there was just one massive problem North Korean players were shown with a South Korean flag beside them as you can imagine the North Korean players were less than thrilled and walked right off the pitch apparently someone forgot the two countries don't really like each other very much and are technically still at war the embarrassing slip led to a whole bunch of apologies and we imagined that someone got very fired salt lake bribery so we've already seen how judges in the sport of boxing were bribed to hand the fight to someone therefore we imagine it wouldn't shock you too much to know that when it comes to awarding a city the right to host the games allegations of bribery are always swirling prior to winning the 2002 Winter Games Salt Lake City had watched four previous bids failed bitter at the results they blamed other city organizations for handing up gifts money and favors in order to secure the winning bid in short bribes a few years before the 2002 Games investigators got their hands on documents a legend that Salt Lake officials had been giving money land and donations to various IOC members responsible for picking the winning city they even had a letter alleging that bribes included paying the tuition of IOC members kids the stink created from the scandal resulted in a number of officials resigning or being fired the IOC and American Olympic officials did everything to sweep it all under the carpet even bringing in Mitt Romney to reorganize things and add some credibility to the whole process crooked judges when it comes to scandals involving crooked and corrupt judges we usually don't find out for sure until after the games are over by then the medals have been handed out in the Olympic Committee can try and sweep the whole thing under the carpet this couldn't be done in Salt Lake City in 2002 for years there was suspicion that figure skating results were fixed when the Canadian pears team of Jaimee saleh and david Peltier finished second to the russian pair Canadian and American commentators and former skaters were short cheating was involved shortly after the French judge who had awarded the Russians the higher score allegedly broke down and admitted the French skating Federation had pressured her to vote for the Russians in exchange for a higher score for the French skaters in a bit of a sham ceremony both Russia and Canada were awarded gold medals today reforms have been put in place to try and prevent more corruption from the judges scandal in Beijing the Olympics in general have nose age limit for competitors that said individual sports can implement their own age restrictions in gymnastics the governing body has sent the minimum age at 16 however in 2008 during the Beijing Games audiences around the world were scratching their heads when they saw some of the Chinese gymnasts those girls definitely looked younger than 16 in the weeks leading up to the games journalists raised the question when they pointed out that heat Katzen and gu yuan were as young as 14 but their official passports said they were 16 speculation continued and was made worse when one of the gymnasts Deng Lin Lin lost a tooth something only common in little kids further digging around brought up various online records and reports suggesting some of the girls were 13 or 14 years old just a few months before the games all of this had precedent - given a member of the 2000 Chinese team had been found to be underage robbery in Rio okay we've had scandals involving age corrupt judges bribed officials and questionable calls how about one that's just plain bizarre and kind of stupid well for that you're going to need a healthy dose of Ryan Lochte the American swimmer would always play second fiddle to Michael Phelps but he made up for it with his comical interviews short-lived reality show and an unusual scandal from Rio de Janeiro during the Olympics we saw news reports that lock teeth and some other US swimmers have been robbed at gunpoint while returning from a party then another story came out it turned out the security footage showed something a bit different the swimmers had actually stopped at a gas station were they proceeded to vandalize the restroom before being confronted by security Lochte managed to leave the country before police could question him interviews with other swimmers confirmed the whole robbery story was made up it all made for an
