welcome back to burn peak i'm seth and this is a dummy pedal it's a pedal you can use the pedal your bike when you don't have a pedal and it's one of many bike tools we're going to be going over today i thought it'd be interesting to aggregate all this into one video if you watch my other videos you've probably seen a lot of these tools but nevertheless we're gonna be doing something a little different today but kind of the same so as i was saying the first weird tool is a dummy pedal you just put it in the crank arm use your thumb to screw it in and then you can pedal the bike and you might think why would somebody ever need something like this and the reason is a lot of higher end bikes do not come with pedals because people want to use the pedal that they want when a bike mechanic's putting the bike together they need to pedal the bike now to screw a normal pedal in you have to mess around with an allen key with this one you can do it with one thumb screwing in in a moment and when you're working in a high production bike shop time is money and that's why somebody would spend their money on a dummy pedal so in addition to dummy pedals they actually make dummy rear wheels or dummy hubs i'll show you what this is for outside at the bike wash station especially when you're washing a bike you want to take the wheels off of it because they're way easier to clean off the bike you also want to clean the drivetrain and believe it or not part of that involves pedaling it the dummy hub stands in place of that rear wheel so that you can wash the bike now it's also used for other things besides bike washing but that's what i use mine for most of the time and you can see this little roller here actually slides along the axles so that you can switch gears and move the derailleur around it doesn't sound like something you would use but if you wash bikes or work on them without the wheels on enough that's pretty good tool to have so the next tool is a chain scrubber this is made for cleaning your chain while it's on your bike and the model number is cm 5.2 so i guess cm stands for like chain massager it opens up and you have this series of brushes inside of it on the top and bottom you fill this with chain cleaning fluid and then you put your chain inside of it close this down onto it and you pedal your bike backwards and it cycles the fluid on your chain it cleans it up real good the chain scrubber there's really not much more to say about it it's the best way to clean your chain off i love using it so something even a casual bike mechanic's gonna know about are spoke wrenches they fit right around the spoke nipple and there's different sizes and you can turn them but what you probably didn't know is that your multi-tool very likely has spoke wrenches in them a lot of people don't notice them this is a crank brothers f-15 it's one of my favorite multi-tools and in the chain tool you pull it out there are these little notches here and there are numbers zero one two three that's the gauge of the spoke nipple that it can turn works just like a normal spoke wrench you can just fit it around and turn it other multi-tools have it here here's another one right in the chain tool i've used these spoke wrenches out on the trail to get people riding again because they bent their wheel so much and it was bowing and hitting into the bike and i was able to straighten out the wheel enough to get them back home and so these are very useful when you're out on the trail so if you didn't know that grab your multi-tool take a look at it and see if you can find some spoke wrenches in it so while we're talking about bicycle spokes this is a spoke tension meter tm1 i guess that stands for tension meter one when wheel builders are building wheels or when you're doing a nice truing job on your wheel you want to make sure that all the spokes are at a very similar tension or whatever the manufacturer recommends this goes around the spoke and then whatever this little arrow points to is what tension the spoke is not gonna find that very interesting unless you build wheels doing it by feel is probably not that accurate compared to something like this very important tool one of the great things about disc brakes on mountain bikes is that if your wheels a little bit out of whack your brakes still work perfectly fine provided that your rotor is still straight and sometimes it's not sometimes it gets knocked into something when you're loading or unloading your car you crash your bike and for that we have the dt2 disc truer two you can grab onto the disc brake in a number of different ways if it's some kind of warp you can try and straighten it out with this little one if it's a big bend you can put it here and move it around the only way i know how to true disc brakes is by looking into the brake caliper and instead of grabbing it with a plier or jamming a screwdriver in here and trying to bend it this is a little bit more precise and purpose-built so as you ride your bike you're going to put wear on your chain and if your chain gets really worn out it's actually going to wear out all your other parts and so you want to check it to see how worn out it actually is the chain checker you just insert it right here put some tension on it right here and then this little probe over here will tell you how worn out it is if it does this your chain is just fine if you can push it inside of your chain then it is actually worn out i don't i don't use this i just pretty much change my chain when it looks bad but if you're a racer if you just put lots and lots of miles in your bike and you're always just wondering about your chain this is a pretty good way to check it so this is a really weird one a headset cup removal tool i've had this for years i use it a lot when i had a bmx bike with headset cups that you have to press in the bearings would actually press into the frame and if you have to get them out you'd basically be taking a screwdriver and hammering it and it wasn't good for business and so this was made to go up through the head tube pop out and then when you pushed it back down it was sitting on top of the headset cup then you would hit it with a hammer and pop it back out i think on the channel we've only used this once but still very useful tool so this next tool when it first came out i made fun of it i ragged on it i said it was expensive now i own it and it is tattered i use it every single time i install tires it is the wh1 the wh stands for wheel holder put it in your vise take this little guy you put it into one of these and then you slide your wheel onto it and it holds it and the reason you want to use this is for installing tubeless tires so you have to have the wheel sort of upright and have the tire open so you can pour sealant into it or so that you can mount the bead onto it being able to have it up at eye level at the bench secure is really really useful if you have a bike shop or you do a lot of tires this thing's a life saver the wheel holder sounds ridiculous something that holds your wheel but it is so freaking useful so you can see here on my bike there's a hole here in the frame in a lot of bikes you have to fish cables through the frame they do that to make it just look a little bit neater and in this bike there are tubes inside the frame that guide the cables but there are some bikes that do not have that and for that use the internal routing tool it's a bunch of little cables with magnets on them and i'm going to show you how it works i only used this in a video very recently and it was on an alloy bike aluminum is a non-ferrous metal and so magnets don't stick to it would also be the same for carbon bike so you have this cable with a very narrow neodymium magnet on the end and you have this tool right over here that sticks to it you fish this into the frame and then you use this to actually guide it through the bike you can move this cable to the other opening in the frame and then pull it out and then you can tape the cable to the other end of this now a lot of people say well why don't you just use the old cable and then tie it to that and just fish it through well if it's a new bike build it's not going to have an old cable to do that with so you need to use the internal cable routing tool this tool right here is known as a third hand and it's used as your third hand when you're doing anything involving a cable whether it be a derailleur or cable pull brakes it is a cable puller what it does is you pull it and it clamps the cable right here and puts tension on it and the reason that you would want to use this is because when you're trying to pull a cable and use a tool to tighten down whatever is clamping it it's very very cumbersome and difficult this makes the job way easier so the cable puller or third hand is a tool that a lot of home bike mechanics really don't have i rarely see people with this and it's so useful so great tool to have and not very widely known so this next product i had to buy for this video i've never used it before and i suspect i never will again it is called the knobby knife and is made for cutting tire knobs i've never used one before and so i'm going to use it right now and try and explain as best i can what it does so as you use your tire it's going to get worn down and the knobs which have nice sharp edges are going to get sort of rounded off i'm going to try and find a knob that's a little rounded off and we're going to fix it you can see here these knobs up here at the top let's say i want to sharpen off the edge of that i'm going to very carefully come down here to the tire knob and cut right through it to do this to each and every one of your tire knobs that's a lot that's a lot of work i suspect that racers who are really serious about racing could probably improve their times by training more rather than spending an entire weekend cutting their tire knobs and whatever they gain in performance they're going to lose in lung capacity from all the fumes that come off of this now with that said this tire knob is razor sharp i mean it really came out pretty good for a first time this exists this exists a tire knob cutter to square off your tire knobs the thinking is you can extend the life of a tire you can fix a knob that's not exactly perfect or if you want to do some kind of special tread pattern like let's say you want to cut off every third knob i don't know i i don't get down to that level of gear heading but for those who do the knobby knife is a tool that exists and people use it so if you work on bikes a lot or if you watch this channel you've probably seen a lot of those tools already but a lot of people from outside the biking world like to eavesdrop into our activity through these videos and so if you're one of those people i hope you found this interesting i hope you liked it we haven't even scratched the surface of unique bike tools so if you want to see another video like this let me know and thanks for riding with me today i'll see you next time the new from the factories burning off of this thing they didn't supply any sort of like stand for it so using a can so it doesn't burn through my workbench [Music] you
