[Music] hello it's virginia during the past few years i've gotten so many questions on like the best places to eat in hong kong so this is it this is my starter pack video whether you're moving into the city or you're just visiting here are the top 10 foods like the absolute essential foods that you have to try before you leave in hong kong the places are really tiny so they're really specialized if you go into a wonton noodle soup place order curry rice and then get disappointed well that's really on you because you didn't order the right thing this hong kong food tour is great because one you can do it within two to three hours because it's within a small area and two they all have english menus and three they're all well known places so it's tourist friendly all the recommended place and locations and their details will be in the description bar below so let's go wait this way [Music] hong kong styles milk tea in cantonese we call it steam at laita which translates to pantyhose milk tea and the reason why is because the way they strain the tea using that sackcloth that sackcloth looked like a pantyhose apparently we're at laung in today to try their hong kong style milk tea so why nam is because they're touted as the inventors of hong kong milk tea it's actually black tea but what's so special is actually the milk instead of using regular milk they use evaporated milk so here where they make the tea now actually used to be their entire storefront their entire store so make sure you take that instagram iconic photo here no better way to enjoy the milk cheese than with the egg tart so why is an egg tart part of hong kong's history is because we were under the british rule and so we have the british to thank for the egg chart now the origins of the egg chart is relatively unknown but it's said that it's supposed to be inspired by the british custard tart but in another publication it was also said that it might have been inspired by the quiche so why taichung well one it was opened in 1954 so it's one of the oldest egg tart bakeries around and two is because our last governor of hong kong chris hatches proclaimed that the best egg tarts in all of the world came from this gay crate thai trek and so what that did was won it thrusted egg tarts into the international spotlight and two it's made tai chan famous ever since he said that egg tarts are best consumed warm and it's got a really nice egg custard jiggly filling and for the pastry there's usually two types one is the cookie crust and the other is the puff pastry crust for today we have the cookie crust it's so good [Music] noodles so this is genuinely my favorite place to get a bowl of buncha noodles in hong kong however i do think for the price the bowl is a little bit small however you have to try at least once and today i get to expense it so let's go so why max noodles well it's because it's a pretty perfect bowl of noodles as you can see they have a spoon it suspends the noodles so the noodles don't get soggy and it's kept fresh until you eat it the one times are at the bottom the wontons are full of plump whole and very juicy shrimp and the soup it's super they call it steam tea so it's like seafood fresh you can definitely tell that they've used some of the dried flounder and some shrimp heads to make the soup so try it as it is first and then what you can do is then use either the hot sauce or the vinegar or both and try it with the condiments inside now we're gonna dunk you can dip but i like the thunk all right now i'm going to ugly eat [Music] hong kong is famous for meat silver rice what we call chinese barbecue are what you might call those stores with meats hanging out in the front and we've actually divided chinese meats even further this is the goose in vancouver we don't really have goose we only have duck but in hong kong people actually prefer goose over ducks because one is a bigger bird and two there's just more weight but typically the goose is going to be more expensive than the duck so well this is the place that auntie bourdain went to and no reservations super succulent tender and has very very crispy skin i have two different types of meat here i have the breast which has no bone and then i also have the back which does have both my most preferred cut is actually the drumstick but they were sold out today because the crispy factor is really important to me so i would recommend getting the meats over rice versus noodle and soup because the noodles and soup can sometimes make the skin a little less crispy so try it first without the plum sauce like the meat is quite tender but then it's like when you bite into it there's like a burst of oil from the layer of fat it's just so so so yummy now you find it a little bit too oily you can also dip it into the sweet plum sauce and it just wicks away some of the oiliness and it's like different with eating it [Music] afternoon tea is definitely something that we can thank the british for bringing to hong kong [Music] a commoner's afternoon tea is a milk tea with the pastry at 3 pm but the fancy afternoon tea that we do with friends on the weekends is at restaurants or hotels and we chat over coffee or tea and there's finger food usually brought out in a three tiered tray typically you start at the bottom with the savory items of finger sandwiches or savory pastries moving onto the scones with the clotted cream and jam and then moving to the upper tiers of full on finger desserts and sweet goodness no matter where you go it's not cheap so why at the peninsula the peninsula the lobby lounge with their live music is considered the og the classic the iconic place to have the afternoon tea in hong kong friendly reminder they have a dress code and they don't take reservations so you have to line up unless you're a hotel guest [Music] pineapple bun this is a classic hong kong bread which is the pineapple bun it doesn't actually have pineapple in it but it said that the top sugary crust looks like pineapple back in the day the breads weren't as tasty so they decided to add a crispy sugary top to make the bread more appealing and more palatable so why well i don't actually know when or how they became so ridiculously well known for their pineapple buns but they are like the golden pineapple buns standard in hong kong if you have extra calories to spare make sure you try the pho which is the pineapple bun with butter there is a slice of ice cold salted butter in the middle and when you bite into it the warmth of the bun will melt that butter and it is so so so good do you like what you see did you enjoy the video don't forget to subscribe then barbecue pork so this is the other type of meats over rice that you have to try in hong kong it's super super yummy now my dad in vancouver always says the pigs are different in hong kong and that has to taste the best in hong kong if you don't like meats with bones you're in luck because tazoo actually uses a cut that's boneless typically it is going to be the pork shoulder and then they cook it with a mixture of fire spice powder honey glazes and other things and to get that glistening outside they use maltose now locals say that the best cut is going to be the bun face cell which means half fatty and half lean but i personally prefer a slightly leaner cut so why hang one because they're historical so apparently they've been established since the late qing dynasty and so they were a local hot spot and then the michelin gave them the michelin recommendations so tourists and locals alike have flocked over to this place and lastly our really big food critic app called open rice also ranked them as like the number one tattoo place to be in hong kong so the number one tip i have for you is that if you get your tattoo as part of like a meal set that tattoo isn't gonna be their best cut what you should do is order their special which is gonna be a little bit more expensive then order your rice on the side i also got if you want a fried egg [Music] egg waffles kaitanzai basically hong kong's most instagramable street food snack and it's also great for sharing an egg waffle is basically a waffle but it's just a little bit differently shaped so even the most least adventurous eaters can try it too in hong kong it is inspired by the dutch dollar pancakes as well now original is plain original and is a great first flavor to get but my favorite is chocolate chip and today we have the earl grey chocolate chip so why mommy pancake well it's because they were awarded a michelin recommendation and i find that across all of their stores their quality and consistency is pretty good it's always going to be super crispy on the outside and then soft and gooey on the inside and it's very very yummy look how full that is inside and how soft and gooey it is [Music] basically baskets of dumplings and deep fried things that are meant to be shared amongst your table traditionally dim sum was steamed but now there's pan fried there's deep fried and basically everything under the sun this is actually a dim from specialty restaurant so it's kind of like a fast-food filter restaurant and it sells them some all day long why tim ho wan well this place actually was once the cheapest michelin one-star restaurant in all of hong kong and they have these bad boys to thank for these are the barbecue pork buns traditionally barbecue pork buns are steamed with that white bread but they've used a pineapple bun but inside they put in the traditional pasty barbecue pork filling they are delicious so good pop part is obviously sweet and the barbecue sauce is sweet too but at the same time their filling also has like a little bit of like onion or a savory bit so it just pairs really really well and it's super fragrant they always come to the table piping hot or warm so always make sure you eat it first and the last place of course human with a chance of fishbowls fishbowls this is our most iconic street food in hong kong i really like the texture it has a really good balance fish bowls are made with fish and usually some sort of filler and then for some varieties like this particular one they deep fry it and they whack on a really nice curry sauce well because it's nostalgic for me i used to live around the corner i used to eat it all the time i used to come and visit hong kong and i used to get it with my parents so this is nostalgic in a bowl for me congratulations now that you've eaten through the top 10 must eat in hong kong let's get to the local hidden gems in the next video hey don't forget what's the weather like in hong kong well it's humid with a chance of visible you
