1 Timothy 4 [Daily Bible Study]

[Music] welcome to branch together my name is Jared and today we're reading from first Timothy chapter four before we dive in let's take a moment to pray god help us be still and listen today to your scriptures help us be open to what this letter says and what it can say to us today wherever we are today I pray that you would bring your spirit of peace and these few moments this would be a time for us to listen a time for us to learn a time for us to grow help us Lord we need help it's in your name we pray amen 1st Timothy chapter 4 now the spirit explicitly says that in later times some will depart from the faith paying attention to deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons through the hypocrisy of liars whose conscience says are seared they forbid marriage and demand abstinence from foods that God created to be received with gratitude by those who believe and know the truth for everything created by God is good and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with Thanksgiving since it is sanctified by the Word of God and by prayer if you point these things out to the brothers and sisters you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus nourished by the words of the faith and the good teaching that you have followed but have nothing to do with pointless and silly myths rather train yourselves in godliness for the training of the body has limited benefit but godliness is beneficial in every way says it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come this saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance for this reason we labor and strive because we have put our hope in the Living God who is the savior of all people especially of those who believe command and teach these things don't let anyone despise your youth but set an example for the believers in speech in conduct in love and faith and in purity until I come give your attention to public reading exhortation and teaching don't neglect the gift that is in you it was give to you through prophecy with the laying on of hands by the Council of Elders practice these things be committed to them so that your progress may be evident to all pay close attention to your life and your teaching persevere in these things for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers all right so again remember that this is a beautiful little letter written from an older man helping a younger man lead a church in chapter 4 paul gives timothy some things to expect some things to focus on and some reassurance of his gifting in verses 1 to 4 he gives timothy a list of what to expect he says listen the Holy Spirit is our guide and people are going to fall away from the faith there are spiritual forces we are battling with expect that pay attention to those deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons now that sounds weird I tend to be the guy who glosses over that stuff but it's everywhere Jesus encounters spiritual forces Peter and Paul do as well in the book of Acts and Paul often comments in his letters about how we are waging a battle against a spiritual world in this particular case it appears that Timothy is working with some folks who have some strange ideas about marriage and food his advice to Timothy to combat this is to say listen everything God created is good receive it with gratitude and know the Scriptures and pray Paul then tells Timothy to be dis disciplined be disciplined let's go of other peripheral stuff let go of fables but instead learn the faith learn sound doctrine and fixture hope on the Living God he has words at the end about self-examination - Timothy says pay close attention to yourself and your teaching ensure salvation for yourself and for those you are teaching he really pushes Peter on listen examine yourself see who you are are you being faithful are you teaching good things then he also gives words of encouragement he tells Timothy don't let people look down on you because of your youth he sank Timothy you got this in your words your love your conduct you can be an example even as a young person don't neglect your spiritual gifts and then he reminds him remember the way they were given to you prophecy and leadership and people came to him and laid hands on him and gave him this gift remember that now a few questions for us today are we disciplined people Paul is basically telling Timothy to remember to focus your time and energy on behaviors and on being godly on this good godly stuff focus on the good things about God the Scriptures the prayer everything that you've learned and are learning let go of all the other stuff so for us today here's a question we can ask are we examining ourselves where are we what do we do with all the stuff that we can consume in this world what's your internet history like how do you spend your social media and Netflix time if you scrolled through all of that what are you actually giving your time to are you giving your time to growing in the faith to growing in the good stuff that leads to godliness and gentleness and humility and kind or are you spending a whole bunch of time on what Paul might call fables at best or things that are really bad for you at worse I used to do something called Buddha bu ta which stands for build up tear away with some small groups I led when I was a youth pastor what I would do is we would take one godly thing one thing that we thought was really good in our life each week and we say we're gonna try to build this up and then we'd - that was bu and then ta is what's one thing we want to tear away what's one thing in our life that's a fable or not good for us or peripheral not that important that we tear away and that's what we do we tweak so for you today I'd like to throw that question to you what would be a Buddha for you what is one thing you want to build up today to help you grow closer to God to help you grow more disciplined in understanding God and living out the faith and what's one thing that keeps you from that that you could tear away today that's all for today we'll see you tomorrow for Chapter five [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
