today we are pushing back on projects that seem to stretch forever and making some terrain in just one day [Music] [Applause] [Music] a great place to start if you're trying to build terrain quickly is a toy like this hot wheels car garage it's going to really give us a huge head start into making a cool piece of terrain in not very much time at all so it comes separate from this plastic base and as you can see the base is pretty clearly designed to be a toy car base there's some details where a gas station pump used to go and the edges have these little slopes on them and there's these little ridges around it that make it awkward so after a little bit of consideration um just not gonna use this base [Music] let's cut a new base out of insulation foam this is a proxon cutter it helps cut through insulation foam really quickly with this hot wire but you don't need one to cut insulation foam you can use a sharp knife as i've done for almost every other project on this channel this just helps speed things up and lets you get some nice clean lines so it's a pretty cool tool i start by just cutting some blocky shapes for my base here i'm cutting out a notch where a staircase is going to go because that'll add some neat detail when in doubt cut some rough blocks and then that'll help you visualize the project you don't need to glue them on unless you like them time for a snack pringles the official snack of scratch building terrain i'm just kidding i'm saving these pringles for later i just want the cardboard tube okay i'll have one those look good anyways i keep cutting blocks of foam as i mentioned before and this helps me block in a rough structure that i decided i want over on the right here marking with a pencil i trim it all to shape it's all very imprecise and improvisational the hot wire foam cutter really helps for cutting longitudinally along the blocks like this but you can just use thinner layers of foam like a one inch foam to begin with and you wouldn't have to bother with this so here i'm marking out some markings on the facing piece of foam and by cutting through this with my hot wire cutter i can easily make an opening that's going to accommodate something like a garage door next using some gorilla glue construction adhesive which is my favorite way to glue styrofoam i glue these pieces together pressing firmly to make sure that there's not too much of a gap in between the layers and in just a few minutes we have a lightning fast concrete building that's going to look really nice on the right-hand side of my structure if you aren't subscribed already please subscribe to the channel and give this video a thumbs up it really helps out using the same construction adhesive i glue the hot wheels structure onto the base that i've made for it connecting it at the top there you can see the pringles tower is going to go over here on the right it's going to be an area where i'm going to make some stairs so i start with some black foam core board and trace out some circles it's useful to have a compass for this step you might have to dust off your math kit from grade 5 or whenever the last time you used this thing was carefully cutting out the knife i end up with some nice circles and cut out the interior circle as well and then this piece is going to slot around my pringles tube and be a walkway halfway up the structure i measure how wide this walkway is where it connects to the hot wheels structure and then measuring that out on my foam core i cut it to make a nice flat side it's going to connect in nicely to that piece and look pretty flush to cover the outside of this pringles tube i'm using some brown packing tape that's used by the post office and stuff to seal up packages you can get a roll for pretty cheap at your post office sliding that into place i mark it with a pencil to get my height and then using these little styrene stairs from plastruct i try to visualize where the stairs need to go to fit properly and mark that with a pencil as you can see i'm not measuring anything i'm eyeballing cutting and throwing caution to the wind because this is after all a one day project there's no time to overthink things we're just building improvisationally here folks i glue some pieces of foam to support my structure these are going to end up as sort of detail boxes later so they won't look so funny once it's done i glue those into place test fit my stairs and glue those in as well the stairs have to have a little landing to look natural with the curve of the tube and that's easily accomplished with a piece of foam core that i cut out earlier from the circle glue those into place do the upper level as well and we end up with this nice spiral set of stairs going around the pringles tube on the inside of the pringles tube i glued a scrap piece of foam just to give it some more surface area and rigidity on the bottom testing to make sure it sits level on the table with that done i used some construction adhesive on the edges and on the bottom you can see there on the bottom the piece is holding a bunch of construction adhesive which is going to give it a lot of stability and then i put that into place and press it holding firmly the joints aren't too clean but we'll worry about that later next with some bits from my bits box a little bottle a little nozzle and some of these pipes which i'll put a link for in the description they're a child's building toy i glued together some interesting looking pipey bits and a little holding tank simple nice i like it i use a long length of dowel to extend the pipe making a longer pipe section that's going to have some good stability and then i glue this into the side of my building pushing it into that foam base with the hot glue to get it nice and stable in there adding details like this not only makes the project look more interesting but it adds another bit of stability to that rickety plastic tower its secret reinforcement disguised as detail next i cut some pieces of chipboard that are the same width as the natural trim on the plastic structure and this is going to tie in my foam core staircase here with the plastic structure by having that unifying bit of trim it's going to visually signal that this is all part of one structure i glue some onto the exposed edges of foam core [Music] and i add a little shape on the side here with a scrap piece of foam because i thought it made things a little bit more interesting when you have a big open wall it helps to cover it with some details just to break things up and make it more interesting to the eye [Music] as you can see i'm using hot glue because it bonds really quickly and i'm done no problem these pieces are little pipe ends that i 3d printed online i'll put a link to the stls in the files below if you can't get these then you can use just the regular bends in normal straws the way that bendy straw has that little elbow part you can do something like that and glue straws together but these are really wonderful and make some really awesome detail really quickly if you can get a hold of these i glue some pipes on connecting the various pieces i'm going to use this empty bottle of prenatal vitamins by the way guys my wife is pregnant so i'll be a father soon i tried to peel off the label but it wasn't coming off very easily so i did the same thing i did on the pringles can and covered it with some of that brown tape i had this plumbing fitting that has a good shape to it but it has some writing on the top of it so i shaved that off with a knife carefully and then hot glued that bottle inside the shape there to create sort of a compound shape that's going to look like an electrical generator or something like that something like this cool looking shape next i'm going to use this hardware cloth you can find this in the outdoor section of something like a home depot and cutting it into place and then bending it with needle nose pliers i'm able to create quite a nice little ladder shape this ladder i'm just going to push straight into the foam with no glue where i want it by not gluing it i have the option to remove it if i need to but it'll stay nicely there on its own next i'm going to use some corrugated paper sometimes you can find paper like this in cookie tins but i'll put an amazon link as well if you want to buy a whole ton of it it's pretty inexpensive and is a great crafting tool i make a little square and hot glue that in just like that a really quick garage door [Music] this adds quite a nice detail with very little effort for the top i'm going to use some granny grating the circular kind i didn't realize this stuff existed until i saw it in the hobby shop but i guess it's for crotcheting in like a circle pattern perfect for the top of something like this quick bit of detail beautiful i was going to add some mod podge but this mod podge container was empty so as a punishment for letting me down i wrapped it in paper strips and tape and it will adorn the terrain forever as a reminder to other mod podge bottles to be better behaved in the future i glue that on and again guys this is adding a lot of stability to the tower even though it just looks like detail it's actually all helping a little candy cane shaped piece of pipe and all of a sudden my structure is quite rigid because of this reinforcement in this corner here i use a little bit more pipe action to get some small details on the front and then once again i'm going to add stability by adding this tiny little barrel that i had in my bits box and that's going to protect those little straw pieces as well from any bumps in the gaming table you can see there's some really ugly joints here where the foam core meets the plastic and i'm just going to cover that up with a piece of cardboard and pretend it's a piece of scrap metal in my final project why not i add a few more around the structure so that one in particular doesn't look so out of place and also to break up this nice flat area of what's going to be concrete add a little bit of glue spread it around with brush a little bit and then sprinkle on some sand this is going to represent crumbling bits of concrete and really add to the neglected detritus feel that i'm going for you want to be sparing with the sand i guess add a little bit of baking soda over top of the sand before it dries and that adds some finer grit as well and there we go guys after one day i'm already have this really nice shaped project it's not as much detail as i could possibly add and some things are a little bit rough but it feels great to get so much accomplished in just one day now let's paint this thing i start by just priming it black with a black spray primer remember to keep your distance from the foam as you spray or you will melt it but any can is safe for foam as long as you keep your distance next i come in with some burnt umber and hit all the metal parts and then with a quick spray of silver spray paint i hit them as well but making sure to leave a little bit of that burnt umber showing you end up with something like this it's quick it's rough and it looks pretty good next we'll add a little bit of gray to paint in the concrete mix that together with a palette knife and i start applying that to all the areas that i don't want to be metal sometimes a quick paint job is all you need you can see here why i left the ladder separate so i can remove it during painting no problem makes it nice and easy i make sure to take my time around the edges of things that i want to stay this metal color rather than that i'm going pretty quickly here with a big flat brush covering all the gray pieces coming back for a second coat where necessary and using a smaller brush around really tight details where i want to be a little bit more careful overall it only took a couple minutes next i use this homemade black wash which is black paint a little bit of dish soap and water as you can see it goes on pretty dark but as it dries it lightens up nicely just provides some contrasting texture and a little bit of contrast around the details using my finger i feather out some nice streaks onto my flatter areas to look like dripping grime and weathering very simple very easy and gets rid of those telltale drip marks that make it look like a different scale now as you can see there's a good root up the front here for my little character to get to the top but on the back there's no ladders or anything to climb up so i came up with this idea to use these magnets and then a little bit of this chain that you can get at a store like michael's a craft store and to just have some hanging industrial chains by pressing it to the magnet it hangs nicely and you can move it around easily getting a ladder wherever you like easily traversable for any self-respecting post-apocalyptic warrior you can even extend the chain by pulling it out almost like it was on a winch which is a cool added benefit [Music] and you can just tuck it back in and it'll stick to the magnet nice and easily pretty cool [Music] you may be thinking okay but what about the magnet on the top that looks kind of weird right well if you add three more it looks quite a lot like a little oil drum and that makes a decent little piece of scatter cover so there you have it guys the one day build is in the books i'm really really happy with how this turned out it's not as detailed as it could be sure but the open layout is actually really great for gameplay you can add scatter terrain wherever you want it and there's plenty of room for different orientations and layouts and you could also have some of the larger units in a bigger game fit easily on many of the different layers so i think this is quite a success a huge thank you to all of my patrons thank you guys for your continued support if you want to join my patreon page we have a
