[Music] dear floral i follow your videos on youtube just like those of uh cesar santos andrew tishler mark carter donald alfonso and many many more i have learned a lot from the know-how and every new video is in enrichment unfortunately however i do not manage to make something out of this treasure except for a few commissioned works for the family and once every year a small exercise picture i am light years away from practicing regularly and daily and actually progressing and getting better over the years i have stocked up on almost everything you need for oil watercolor graphite ink pen etc i bought books which i didn't work through consistently i even have a great luck to live in my own little house where i could set up a small studio i'm already ashamed to be blessed with all the presents but not to make anything out of it my problem is that i'm afraid to paint fear of failing not being able to meet my own demands sarah with my last bigger painting two years ago i got stuck again after the underpainting i lack the courage to develop the painting further and i'm afraid i won't be able to do it and destroy the underpainting which has become quite good until then the so-called red thread which i would have to develop for myself from all these tutorials is missing i'm desperately looking for a way that leads me to daily training be it sketching drawing painting or whatever without excuses that the lawn has to be mowed or any other work in the house has to be done first dear flor maybe you know this situation from others and you have a hint on how to proceed here to pull myself by the hair out of the swamp okay thank you for your patience in reading this i would be very happy about an answer from you otherwise keep up the good videos and your great paintings thank you very much i wish you and your family all the best and above all health kind regards thomas dear thomas your email touched me deeply i think you're afraid of the potential within yourself it's dying to be expressed but you're afraid of what might come out there is no way to pull yourself by the hair out of the swamp you must dive in swim as deep down as you can and bounce back once you hit the bottom you're supposed to paint what's on the bottom because nobody on the surface can see it you don't paint what everybody sees don't get lost in technicalities you do need hard work sketching and practicing to reach the creativity you desire but more importantly you need a reason to do the hard work learning how to speak japanese is a lot more difficult if you know there's not going to be anyone to talk japanese to in the future but if your significant other lives in japan you can learn faster and better than anyone because there's a good reason for that what is your reason to learn how to paint what is your why can you face it can you name it i'm going to give you mine i'm overly conscious of my mortality i know time on this earth is limited and i believe that my art can survive me somehow there was a lingering anguish within me that needed to be expressed through my art so seven or eight years ago i decided to dedicate myself to this very thing i did the hard work the daily training etc i did face all the problems you're afraid of facing failing not being able to meet my own demands getting stuck after the end painting destroying a promising painting but it all came after i realized what my reason was i've destroyed more failed paintings than i've varnished successful ones but there was always a reason to keep going since you've collected all the equipment over the years you probably already have your reason to paint but i noticed that you didn't tell me about it it doesn't have to be grandiose it can be just for fun it can be for someone else start thinking about this face it name it then put it in every line every brushstroke every failure practicing can't always be fun and relaxing keep that in mind it will be frustrating and at times you will make a study and the result will be very disappointing so take every study for what it is a stupid freaking study nobody will ever show it in the museum nobody around you has to see it and when you're done if you don't have space to store it the trash is always an appropriate option it's just a stupid study the value doesn't come from the study itself but from the experience you gain by doing it as long as you apprehend making big paintings keep making small studies and throw them away if they're bad experiment see how far you can push it until it's good for the trash put your hands in the paint see what works and what doesn't work the lawn can wait it grows back all the time anyway so who cares embrace failure until you're bored of it learn from your mistakes and start again every failure is just another way not to paint once you adopt the right mindset you'll use the information you've been gathering over the years you'll find the right techniques you will use the right videos the right tools and read the books the right way but first you have to put your hands in the paint figuratively of course at the end of the day it doesn't matter that you succeed it matters that you do because the alternative is that there is nothing the canvas remains blank forever and what good is this nothing is always a possibility and yet it matters that there is something in the universe instead of nothing it matters that you paint something instead of nothing all the best to you and your family take [Music] care [Music] [Music] you
