humble half square triangle to show stopping stunning quill I got you today's video I text a famous YouTuber friend to see which order I should put on my HST quilt I come up with a brand new word in today's video you definitely want to hear it I break seven needles making this quilt I'll tell you how I did it hi friends I'm Tracy this is the sewing Channel enough talking already let's jump right into it the first thing you need to know about this quilt is that it's mostly made up of half Square triangles and that's it half Square triangles are like the Crux of quilting you can do hundreds if not thousands of designs with half Square triangles today's quilt is just one of those easy peasy half square triangle quilts that make a huge impact when I first decided that I wanted to make a fall quilt I needed to find the right colors now I'm not really a fall quilting quilter this is my very first fall quilt I'm not really into the colors of fall I know they're nice and all but they're just not me but the first thing I knew I needed to do was get together a palette of colors that I wanted in this quilt now there are a few missing that as I went in my stash I did add to this quilt but this is mainly the colors I wanted some rusty Reds some oranges Brown Blues mostly Navy Blues darker Blues some teal or Aqua but in the darker range some greens in all different shades and of course there are Tans and taupes and you know that kind of shading because I wanted to go with dark and low volume half Square triangles I started with five inch squares and I cut them on the diagonal just like that now I did that with both my lights and my darks so here's a light version now why did I do one at a time half Square triangles because for one thing as a quilter it's just my pet peeve I don't like having two blocks that are identical so I do them separately so that I can mix and match so that I can maybe add that one to that and possibly let's see here how about we add this low volume print there so I end up with three separate blocks that way that are different rather than having two that are totally alike now that's just me now if you want to do like the multiples at a time half Square triangles that's not this video I like to do separate I can tell you though I came up with an easier way to connect the half Square triangles in today's quilt so that way things don't get too out of hand wonky if you know what I mean because when you cut a half square triangle you're cutting on the bias and that means stretch just so you know typically I would have a full stack of darks and lights and I would pair them together and then take them over to my gluing station this is the tip that I found most helpful for doing single one at a time half Square triangles or any half Square triangles so you have your two that are paired up here you're going to take your glue stick any glue stick will do it doesn't have to be a fancy sewing glue stick and I'm simply going to just Mark the very edge because you don't want to come into that quarter inch seam allowance you just want that very edge and you can put like three or four how many I found that three or four was fine it was just like I was pinning and then I'm just going to line this up and then press those together and then set it over here ready for my quarter inch and then I would just do this again right on the very end it's like having built-in pins that you don't have to take out again it's really nice I enjoyed my half square triangle so much more by gluing thank you come over to your sewing machine and then just chain piece like you normally would these little half Square triangles are not going anywhere on the bias you can trust it now on all of my half Square triangles I did end up pressing to the dark side set the seam real quick and then you'll take and open up and press to the dark side now I typically sew a scant quarter inch seam allowance and doing this I end up with a little tiny bit of waste but not much at all it's pretty much non-existent sometimes depending I cut these down to four and a half inches Square these half Square triangles end up being the base of our quilt now there are several blocks in this quilt today that I have fussy cut on point all on point means is that the block is turned so that it goes like this so it's at a kind of a V shape instead of being just Square so here you can see with my apple print how cute is that right it's very fall looking so I'm going to lay this on here just so you can kind of see what I did you're going to find your focal point within that print and then you are going to turn your ruler like so so that the diagonal is up and down to you it's not like this in doing that it's going to end up nice and even and straight within our quilt this block I'm going to fussy cut at six inches Square and just like that I have six inches Square now you need to find those outer pieces for this block these triangles right here were cut from that original five inch square so it's just five inch squared cut diagonally and you're going to find which one you want around your fussy cut block I chose the darker color to go around my fussy cut block and you'll see in the overall picture how that looks and how that's all going to come together take this grab your paper and your glue and just go along the edge just a few times and remember not to go inward too much because you don't want to catch that glue within that quarter inch seam allowance and you'll just line it up so that you have even hangover on both sides of this Square now before you add any more on though you're going to go ahead and sew that quarter inch we're going to set the seam and then we are going to just flip that out now I'm going to just keep adding clockwise add some glue just little dots of it I think it's amazing really how that glue holds make sure that you have the same amount of overhang I hope you know what I mean there by overhang on both sides where that block ends and then sew your quarter inch and again you're going to set the seam foreign this color right here was really hard for me to find I found only a couple pieces that had this eggplant color in it and I really wanted to incorporate this even when I went to the store I still couldn't find that color and I really felt like it was a really good fall color and the last one on here now if you put too much glue along that edge when you connect them you'll know if you did because it'll crinkle up a little bit there and you don't want that that's why I say just a tiny bit of glue really holds this block together here is that really cute block and now I'm going to trim this down to eight and a half inches Square let me tell you on this one I did not get this one perfectly eight and a half inches Square every time I don't know it seemed like I was either cutting smaller larger or not enough in my seam allowance or too much I don't know sometimes that just happens the way it is in quilting I don't know you're going to line it up eight and a half inches best that you can or find somewhere within that middle of the eight and a half to cut and here I can get some of this off some of those little leftover ears there the one thing you want to make sure is that you have at least a quarter inch on each seam right here so that you don't cut your points off I did pretty good on this block actually I'm probably right on the money with the eight and a half inches so it wasn't so though with all of the blocks so keep that in mind so consistency is key when you are trying to fit together pieces that are like this because we have to connect the half Square Triangles around this block everything is going to build off of this block right here let me pop a picture right here of the block that we're going to build right now it's outlined in red now I don't really want you to look at anything else right now but I just want you to notice how that block Nestles in between a top row and a bottom row the bottom of that row that's right above here will actually be the points for this block and same thing with that bottom block I just thought that visual might help you see how we're going to build this block but I'm going to build this block first and then I'll show you how to build that bigger block you're going to take your half Square triangles that should be a light in a dark and you're going to line your darks right next to your dark there and then your next dark you're going to put right there so it sort of points that way we'll add this one here and add this one here so oh no wrong whoops so that way that points this way so we'll add these two together and those two together and then connect to the side okay [Music] let's take a look at that larger block that's within this coil so here I've fussy cut this really cute bird with this kind of purpley background I've added on my Corners already so now all I have to do is add in all of my half Square triangles that go around this one now remember this block is going to be fully Square so it's going to have all the pieces in it unlike this one right here that only had the side pieces on it it's almost inevitable with a quilt like this that you're going to get pieces that are the same on the other block just it's just the way that it is I mean it's so hard to keep them all separate now what you need to take note on the bigger Square this right here the cornerstones of that big Square they are turned so that the darker piece is faced outward so hopefully you can see the effect that this gives with that lighter being on the outside of the darker and you can really tell that that's a square right there and that part that we set on point the focal fabric right there that is really going to pop because that's what your eye is going to be drawn to when you see the light the dark and then what this exactly is here in the center now I'll sew all that up but I won't do that on camera because you know you don't want to see that right but I am going to take this real quick and show you that on that next row down what you're going to do is set that so that these two darks are together it's kind of offset so you have this focal fabric here on point and then you have this and it's sort of staggered but that will line up like that and then that will make that square there so let me sew that up and then I'll show you what that looks like huge thank you and shout out to my newest supporters for coffees and super thanks SRO Lisa patience tandle and Chris Bolton I really do appreciate all of your support so there's only one more block to learn how to make and it's really easy it's just like an oversized flying geese type block all you're going to do is cut out a rectangle at four and a half by eight and a half inches you see this piece right here on the end and also this block right here this is that happy block this is representing half of that focal block and then of course you have your border right here so just take four and a half by eight and a half piece of focal Fabric and then you're going to put your corners on them like so sew them down then you're going to sort of like snowballing Corners in effect you're going to sew those on there cut off the excess press it out depending on if it's on that end or this end if it's if it has words or if it's directional you'll want to keep that in mind like this one right here says Happy fall if I were to turn it and put it on the other end it would say Happy fall upside down and nah so you'll want to keep note of any words or directional Fabrics so say if it's on this end over here I think I've designated this one for the bottom left row so it's just a tiny block it consists of that four and a half by eight and a half with the triangles on the two sides and then trimming those down to four and a half by eight and a half and then you'll want to add those on there like so sew that all up and then there's that block so you'll just take this and set those on the ends and I think you need six I think all of the other half Square triangles in this quilt are sewn within the blocks and what I mean by that is they're sewn at the bottom or the top of that piece right there or they're sewn on the sides of that focal piece the top row was the only row that I did differently as far as how I sewed the half Square triangles on just to keep everything even being that this is this sort of block and then it shows up here and then it'll show up one more time so you'll just take your long strip of half Square triangles that you've sewn together this will make the top of this quilt now remember though we haven't put any borders on yet and I'm going to definitely do some border work here I just haven't figured that out yet so you have that top row and you can see here where that connects onto here so I've just taken and positioned this half square triangle so it was the dark down so that it made in with that block and then so on and so forth and these two will be dark pointing this way but there'll be nothing but a border connected to it I'm gonna get the rest of these blocks all sewn up and we are going to put it all together up on my design wall so you can see what it looks like before I even sew any rows together so here's the full quilt top right here without the borders on and pretty much all of those blocks are sewn together I just have to sew the blocks themselves together to each other and then the rows and then I will have a completed quilt top and get the borders straight I'm really struggling with the borders so hopefully I can get that all figured out the next time you see this quilt hopefully everything is sewn together the borders are on I've struggled through it and then it will be time to Free Motion quilt my favorite thing [Music] thank you I totally struggled on which border to use on this quilt you can see the first one on the top and then the second one what more could I do than to text a friend a fellow quilting friend April story from April's craft room I text her both of those pictures and she said oh yeah the one on the bottom and that's exactly what I was thinking April thank you so much so I added the borders on and then I sandwiched my quilt with some wool batting and some really soft minky dot but here was the problem I didn't buy enough of that real pretty mellow yellow for the back of this quilt so I've coined a new phrase and it's called minkenstein so yes friends you heard it right and you heard it here first on the sewing Channel minkenstein adding two different Mickeys together making one so friends take a look at this picture right here and I even threw away the first couple of needles that I did break I think I lost count but it was around seven that I did break on this particular quilt now why would that happen well during the free motion quilting is when this all happened whenever you have multiple seams coming together in one spot you have what's called bulk and I did not really make sure which way any of the seams were going on this particular quilt which caused a lot of build up and when I was free motion quilting so fast like I do it just pulled the needle and wasn't able to go through those multiple layers at the speed that I was going super frustrating for sure but I could have totally thwarted what happened if I would have made sure that all my seams were laying open and flat lesson learned again needless to say this was not my most favorite quilt that I've ever free motion quilted because I had to keep watching for those bulky seams and it made my free motion quilting a little jerky as well so it wasn't the most fun that I typically have when I free motion quilt it really just goes to show that the little tiny things that we do in quilting really do matter like on something like this totally flat seams were needed and I didn't pay attention to it so had I have done it nice and flat and opened all the seams and really took care in that area I would have probably not broken one needle the quilt though it still looks really good in the end nobody can tell that I really did struggle I mean I know I struggled and someone has already said that they wanted this quilt and they have no clue what the struggle was since this is a fall quilt I decided on a wrap around back binding and that minky along the edges is so nice when you want to cuddle up on a nice cold day so here's a quick video clip of how to do that from my boho baby quilt video I'll show you how to make a perfect mitered wraparound minky Corner the first thing in this process is to make sure that this backing is totally out of the way trust me you do not want to cut your backing after you just did all this work on this quilt I'm not going to use my rotary cutter because I'm very afraid of cutting that so I'm going to hold it up sort of toward the light and then just snip off all of this excess batting now I'm only cutting right up to that very edge but I'm making sure not to cut the backing oh I'm so afraid of cutting it because I can't really see when I'm showing you all but for my wrap around binding I'm going to cut three quarters of an inch all the way around so all I'm going to do is line up right along here I'm using the fabric as my guide not really the batting it's more so the fabric and then I'm going to line it up three quarters of an inch would help if I had a longer ruler right and then slice and then continue all the way around find the 45 degree mark on your ruler it's right there you're going to line that 45 degree line up along one of the side edges of the corner the outer corner so I'm going to choose to line it up right here so I'm lining it up as straight as I can and I'm going to push it away about an eighth to a quarter of an inch right in here very little very very little almost like more of an eighth sometimes I don't even I cut right at the corner so when that is straight you are going to take your rotary cutter and slice take that whole end off and you can even cut this little point off if you want just very tiny very tiny then you're going to take and flip to the back like this fold those back and back together so the back side and you're going to line those up right at the cut Edge all the way down nice and straight you can clip it if you'd like when I sew my mitered corners on I always start sewing from this Edge right here that pointy Edge away from that corner because I want to catch those in there perfectly straight and even so I don't have to fuss with them later back stitch [Applause] so it looks like this and cut that thread off if you'd like all you're going to do is I take my finger put it in there push this in and get a pointy tool if you'd like to help push that out and then clip the rest of your binding down and then you're going to sew right along that edge staying real close and just tack that all down it's important to note that minky does not Fray so once that is tacked down that's it you never have to worry about it it's not going to fray no worries when you get to the middle of that seam you're going to lift up your presser foot and pivot so I just wanted to take that out real quick and show you what that looks like perfectly minored and soft for a baby once you get your wraparound border on it's important to note that you can take some curved snips and clean the edges up so you can see here that this looks you know Jagged from where I put it on so I'm just going to go through and being sure not to cut my quilt top I am just going to snip along evening out that entire Edge all the way around the quilt do not try this with regular scissors though you really need to be using curved snips after texting a friend on the border whipping up a batch of minkenstein and seven broken needles my quilt is done let's take a look the huge Takeaway on today's quilt tutorial is the fact that you can take a very humble half square triangle and turn it into a stunning show stopping quilt where people be like wow how did you do that simply by rearranging these half Square triangles you can create so many stunning show-stopping designs I challenge you try it take a look at your screen right now I've hand-picked videos just for you if you like today's tutorial go ahead click on one of them I dare you and I'll see you in the next tutorial until next time on the sewing Channel take care [Music] foreign [Music]
