[Music] [Music] just my luck i knew today was too good to be true look at this it is currently january in middlesbrough i've just finished filming a video in sunderland and i am now in middlesbrough and i had plans to start my video where else could you start a middlesbrough video except from the brian clough statue in albert park of course and this is what it looks like just by luck that the day the old footy adventure comes to middlesbrough is when brian clough is encased in this fence why is he is there any damage to it i can't see anything what a shame still going to tell you about him an incredible history of middlesbrough in this video i'm sure a lot of you know brian clough from his exploits as a manager and there can't be too many footballing people personalities players managers whatever who have got three statues in three separate cities within the uk is there any others i'm not sure not i can think of the top of my head but here is one of brian clough and the other two that you will see in derby and in nottingham will be to commemorate him as a manager but not many commemorate him as a player and look there you can see him there a very young brian clough for his boots uh strapped to his back there as he's carrying them home from a game because he did play for middlesbrough and middlesbrough used to play at a place called airsome park before they moved to their modern riverside stadium they played an older classic stadium called airsome park that wasn't far away from where we are now in albert park which is just a lovely park in middlesbrough where the residents of the city can come and enjoy some nice leisure time as did brian clough do that back in the day he would play for middlesbrough and then walk home through this park and here is a statue to commemorate just that this man behind me here encased in this fence is synonymous with nottingham forest and with derby county for what he did for those clubs as a manager but as a player he did incredibly well for middlesbrough a lot of managers that you see these days weren't that great a player you don't get too many top top level players becoming good managers but brian clough scored over 200 goals for middlesbrough in just six seasons right in this video i'm going to be exploring middlesbrough we're going to be going to check out the riverside their current stadium we're going to be checking out where their old stadium was there's a few things to see i love doing this i've done it with upton park highbury main road as well as many many others all around the uk visiting old sites of old stadiums i absolutely love to do if there's any more that you can think of drop them in the comments section below but yes we'll be checking out the old home of borough the new home of borough we've seen the clough statue [Music] formed in 1876 there aren't many older clubs than middlesbrough in world football they played in albert park which is where we just were where we started the video for a while as amateurs before they damaged it so much that they had to move on they had a few grounds in the 1800s during their early life more of them i'd say were probably closer to playing fields than they were to actual stadiums but they did play in a few different locations after winning a few amateur cups fa amateur cups that was the most prestigious amateur competition at the time during the late 1800s they then turned pro they joined the football league and in the early 1900s when they were in the football league and had gone professional they needed to move away from just playing in fields and find an actual stadium to play in and look you can see that quite a few of these houses look fairly new we're in quite an important place of middlesbrough's history so give me a second i'll tell you a little bit more and i'm currently on the site at which middlesbrough used to play as i just mentioned in the car look a lot of these houses are fairly new the old stadiums of the olden clubs and the olden days would have been in and around the terraced housing of the people especially up in the north um a lot of the stadiums you look at anfield was in and around with the people as was goodison people didn't have um as good transport links to be able to get to stadiums back then so it had to be near to where they lived so just looking at these houses here you can tell that these ones are a lot older than the newer ones which are through there so i imagine these were the old original homes of the fans of middlesbrough who would then just have the short walk to there to watch them play and their old ground was called airsome park and there are a few telltale signs as to how it used to be here look at that airsome park road these residents along here would have had not very far to go to um to watch their beloved borough play and even look here this road is called the turn style leading to midfield let's go check out midfield shall we do you think that is to do with it being the old stadium location the midfield i guess it must be i guess the turnstile must be as well this must have been the part of the ground that we're on right now of where people would have come and got their tickets checked or bought their tickets at the turn style i love that they've kept these names for the place of course airsome park road the turnstile the midfield and then i think there is clough close as well which we'll go have a look at in just a sec borough were playing here for 92 years before they had to move to the riverside it was designed by archibald leach i've spoken about him numerous times so sorry to bore all the all the regular viewers with more stories about my favorite scottish stadium architect here we are now at the midfield maybe we are standing right on the pitch where middlesbrough used to play not just middlesbrough though i'm surprised that a communist revolution never sprung up as during the 1966 world cup airsome park was used for a couple of games some of which were between the soviet union and north korea north korea incredibly knocked out italy in that world cup on the very bit of land where i'm standing now who knows maybe this is the very part of the stadium where a north korean took a shot from to knock out the incredible italy side the highest ever attendance was 53 000 people for a game against newcastle that is around 20 000 more than the full capacity now at the riverside post hillsborough the taylor report came in which stated that clubs of the second division ohio needed an all-seater stadium there wasn't much room to improve the stadium around here so they had to move on the final competitive game was a win for middlesbrough against luton to secure the first division title to gain promotion to the premiership what a send-off that must have been john hendry scored the final competitive goal here and apparently they have kept some of the gates that once stood here as part of ayrson park and they've taken them to the riverside so we'll go check out clough close and then we'll head to the new ground now and see if there's any old relics left of airsome park just a few roads across from where we were a second ago we are now on clough close and look there is even a house for sale on clock close should we all um move to clough close and reminisce about old stadiums and old times here for borough it is really weird um how just literally street names of football related stuff can make me so excited i wish there was one or two more things maybe a plaque or a statue or something to commemorate airs and park maybe there is and i've not seen it let me know in the comment section below and i will come back [Music] [Music] for anyone coming to middlesbrough for a game i would recommend this place for a cavalry before kickoff [Music] [Music] here we go look middlesbrough football club founded in 1876 middlesbrough fc have played uh has played at the riverside since 1995 these gates originally formed part of borough's former airsome park 1903 to 1995 there you go over 90 years these would have stood at airsome park these incredible gates i love they kept them here and you can tell can't you look at the old sort of painting and the uh text of that you can kind of tell it is from elsewhere and it's fantastic that they've kept it here right next to the riverside some of the shots gonna look great on the montage we have wilf man uh manion the golden boy of middlesbrough england and great britain from and he uh lived from 1918 to 2000 a legend of the club there and also george hardwick captain of borough england and great britain look at that i love statues outside of stadiums we've seen a couple today at least these ones haven't got fences around them like fluffy anyway [Music] [Music] look at middlesbrough's league finishes over time they've only ever been in the third tier twice and um when they have gone down to the third tier they have bounced back immediately straight away they've never been champions but they've been consistently top one or two tiers and even throughout my childhood i always remember them in the premier league or the premiership as it may have been called back then i remember steve mclaren was their manager and i remember them being yet a pretty good club who should probably be top championship if not in the premiership most years talking of my memories of having like seen middlesbrough as a kid and stuff i think i've seen them play once or twice um as the away team at certain games but um steve mclaren led them to their highest ever finish of seventh in the league back in 2005. like i say they've never won the top tier before but they've won the northern league in the 1800s they've also won two third tier titles and four second tier titles they have been fa cup runners-up in their history too but it wasn't until 2004 that borough won their first piece of major silverware borough versus bolton steve mclaren against big sam seven minutes into the game and middlesbrough were two no up thanks to a goal from joseph to zero job and then a penalty from beaudoin zenden it looks like i won't be able to get around here and then bolton got one back after about 20 minutes i think it was kevin davis if my memory serves me correctly and borough went on to win 2-1 and the scenes looked unbelievable their first ever piece of major silverware they'd been to finals before but they finally had won the league cup okay it wasn't the fa cup it's not the league title but it just finally got them onto the trophy hall as a club i'm sure the fans were absolutely delighted to finally have a bit of silverware to brag about northeast rivals sunderland and newcastle have won a lot compared to these two i did a video just recently where i spoke about the histories of the both comparing two clubs seeing who was kind of bigger who'd won more sunderland have got more league titles newcastle have got more cups but burra here only have one league up and a handful of smaller divisions what period of success they had in the mid 2000s of course they won the league cup had the highest finish in the premier league as well but they also reached the uefa cup final in 2006. they finished topping the group stages of the uefa cup including teams like az alkamar and grasshopper they beat stuttgart roma basil or baal however you want to say it and stower bucharest on their way to the final where they played sevilla and that was just one final one game too many for them in their run in europe that year sadly how incredible would it have been though for borough to have won the uefa cup a huge trophy like that it's similar to i guess villarreal who hadn't won a trophy in their entire history that was a little bit like borough before i guess the league cup final in 2004 so for them to have won the 04 league up and then potentially the 06 uefa cup would have been huge sadly they couldn't get across the line they lost four nil in the final and just to show how far those clubs have gone since then it was actually their first ever major european final each so that was seville's first major european final or sevillas and middlesbroughs as well so sevilla have gone on to win six uh for cups slash europa league since then and middlesbrough are currently seventh in the english championship from when i'm filming this just now of course the stadium is called the riverside for the very obvious reason that it is right next to the river tease look at that look at the beautiful reflection there they've got some really straight like this little thing here is very trippy to look at they've got some cool stuff here down by the river as you can tell it's very industrial part of the world the northeast spoke about that at sunderland earlier you can watch that sunderland newcastle video now and you may hear whenever middlesbrough plays sunderland it'll be the weir teas derby or the tease weird darby and then if they were to play newcastle it'll be the time teased darby [Music] [Music] [Music] just bought some stuff in the middlesbrook club shop if you want to win it there is an instagram post on screen right now i'll also do a pinned comment to that instagram post go there follow me click through to the from the pinned comment through to the post follow me uh like the post and just tag one friend and you can enter as many times as you like to get more entries just tag all your mates but not in the same comment just put like one mate in one then the next in another just put a load of comments on there the more entries uh the more comments the more entries basically so yeah if you want to win this stuff head on over to my instagram give me a follow and enter now so middlesbrough have had some absolutely massive names associated with the club from cluff to styles to souness to gaza brian robson jack charlton alf common who was actually the first player in history to be transferred for over a thousand pounds to borough from sunderland in 1905. middlesbrough are a massive club it's a shame they haven't won the fa cup or the league they haven't quite reached the top echelons of english football but they do have a leak up to their name meaning that they are one of the clubs to have a major trophy to their name which is fantastic and they've been in the european final they had an old classic ground and they've had some huge names associated with them are you a borough fan let me know some borough facts in the comment section below and uh if you'd like me to come back i should be coming to
