i'm explorer ed stafford i need to be so careful up here and i've put myself through extreme tests of endurance and isolation to become a survival expert the wind is really picked up now now i want to push myself even further to find out what i'm really made of all right come on stuff and keep going so i'm testing my skills against the world's toughest survivalist i was going to gamble i'd put the money on myself here's hoping i'm the first woman out this is my race a head-to-head race and job across the wild unforgiving landscapes of china in a bid to prove to myself that i'm on top of my game it's not about beating my chest this is probably hard it's about taking my skill set to the next level this time i'm taking on my old friend and teacher will got this challenge he's a primitive skills expert and the man who taught me a lot of what i know about prehistoric survival we're heading deep into the bamboo forests hostile caves and rocky mazes of central china ed's going to miss things because he's going to be moving so fast i'll be listening to the birds i'll be actually listening to the forest itself yes mate well how lovely to see you and you and you oh mate i'm just stoked you're here i haven't seen you in ages i know it's been what seven years yeah will lord is the leading primitive skills expert in the uk seven years ago i employed will to teach me basic survival skills he taught me how to make a bow and arrow he taught me how to nap stone into a cutting tool a relationship in the past he's been very much one of the teacher of student there's a truck waiting for us down there let's um let's go and jump to the back okay brilliant okay cool well we're running into the viewpoint guys to actually have a look over the ground you're gonna be traveling in gary humphrey is a bit of a legend in the survival world he's ex-special forces he's led expeditions all over the world gary will be designing the course he'll also be monitoring my progress throughout the race this course here i've designed it to push the fellas to the extreme limit they will start in a treacherous gorge that runs east to west and they find their way south towards a disoriented maze of limestone shards called the dragon's teeth they then enter one of the largest bamboo forests in asia on the other side lies a massive sinkhole the first man to reach the bottom will be the winner so ed i want to up the stakes a little bit i'd like you to leave your knife back here so with no knife well there's plenty of rocks down there and you came to me for a lesson in it yeah can we yeah yeah all right challenge is on yeah i've got a smile on your face you're one nil up at the moment okay let's get to the start point down in the gorge right i think i'd be a fault if i was to think that i could out do well at what he is good at whether he fully understands that i'm not the naive person that i was when i trained under him i don't know but i do have an element of confidence that over those years i have gained a lot of experience this is it this is the gateway this is the gorge i'll see you in a week at the bottom of the sinkhole best of luck first of all okay and go it's cold it's super slippy every rock is covered in moss slippy as an ice rink the direction i'm traveling at the moment is not south south and straight through that rock base so if i can find some way to branch to the left and i'll be going back south i'm just wondering where i can get that gully up there to gamble but i'm gonna date the risk it looks like seriously bad choice mr stafford all the best with that that's just completely insane the rocks are slippy on either side this does not look very good actually this feels sketchy on the tracker it is quite interesting to see the tactics that ed and will are using it is taking a more direct but harder route south he will need to cross dangerous 300-foot limestone cliffs while will is heading west following the river this is a longer but less risky route out of the gorge how am i being stupid about it here looks like the entrance to a cave and it is cold that is ridiculous that is so cold i need to demonstrate this for the camera how how strong this wind is see that that is how strong the draft of air is coming out of the cave is if there's air flowing through it that means there's a an exit on the other side making myself a hasty shelter and then tomorrow i can prepare myself properly and enter the code because that could be my winning ticket i cannot believe it you sexy sexy beast wow i am home for the night ah perfect i've gotta say bamboo is amazing isn't it nice bit of fire the shell of this bamboo has got silica in it and you can actually strike a spark off of it rub that backwards and forwards quite hard not going to give up i'm just going to go again baby we have fire i spent my whole life being called a caveman and you know what tonight i literally am the caveman i've got no idea what this cave might hold so i'm taking torches and firewood to prepare for every eventuality okay i've now got water in front of me it's up to about shin level at the moment i'm getting colder by the second i can feel breeze again i can feel breeze coming it could indeed be an exit not very far ahead i've had no option but to enter the water now and it's getting much faster now oh let's go that is properly cold no that's too but that's too cold i'm too deep that water is likely to be about eight nine degrees celsius and i do risk going down with hypothermia i've decided to stop him i'm gonna use the firewood it's day three it has reappeared on the tracker will's in the lead and is heading towards the dragon's teeth any protein fish and chips would be anything i just saw a little ripple in the water and so i know that there is fish in here but i'm just thinking if i can get some ash leaves then what i can do is crunch up the ash leaves get the sapenings out of them that will then starve the fish of oxygen and um fingers crossed the fish that are in there that are hiding in the little crevices will just float to the surface and i've got a super saponins are a chemical compound found in a lot of plants around the world and they're highly toxic to cold-blooded animals like fish okay all i'm going to do now wet it and then oh you can see the color this method is so simple that chinese school children do it for fun there's one ah i've got one let's see if there's more let's leave that there there's one yes yes it's a weird sort of bottom feeder slightly catfish-esque because it's so small there's no need to gut it at all ah oh that was maybe i should should have gutted it [Laughter] that was the most disgusting thing that's made me happy ever hold on i think i've seen something look at the size of this thing there's no joy in taking that that's the natural order when you're in a place like this you fall straight into the natural order how about that for a headband eat your heart out and stafford i'm putting a snake on a bamboo i have a roasted snake it's tougher than fish it's more flavoursome than chicken this is undoubtedly the best thing i've had to eat since i've got vagina life is good is undeniably the best thing that has happened i am now in the lead oh yeah baby whenever i've put the pigment of the land on my face you get something you get some kind of grip and connection i've just got a brand new level of strength just by putting that on let's get this done shall we come on on the tracker it's shown that ed has made ground he's now ahead however bamboo forest is a nightmare to navigate [Music] i know that i'm heading roughly in the right direction but it's just too slow maybe i can somehow get above the bamboo you can see the fastest route out i can head in that direction and then see i can navigate the bamboo i'll have to remember what the snake told me be smooth glide my plan is actually very simple it's literally to lash the three tripod legs together at the top and then hopefully i'll have enough strength to literally walk it up into position splay the legs out and then put some rungs on it and get up and above the canopy came in somewhat arrogantly thinking do you know what i understand bushcraft on the fly and yet already i found myself in a situation where i've had to use wildlord's teachings to make myself a saw out of stones if i hadn't actually taken that time i wouldn't have been able to cut any of this bamboo and i wouldn't be able to solve this problem is up this is the moment of truth i've got a view over the entire bamboo canopy a monkey's eye view in front of me is kilometers maybe three four kilometers of bamboo but just to the west there's only about 150 meters and i can escape ed has changed direction totally and he's got the shortest path out of the bamboo forest he's heading towards the open grassland towards the sinkhole i can see the sink rolling in front of me yes the posture my lungs are burning i just hope i haven't pushed too hard too soon but it's not a good sign i can see footprints in front of me he's in front of me there's absolutely no way of just descending straight down there that would be suicide okay this is frustrating now i'm losing time i found a route i am that far from the finish line win or lose i'm in there yes okay we've got an area of sort of forest at the bottom you can hear him coming around he's moving fast and i can see gary gary [Laughter] how are you am i the first man out sadly you're not sadly you're not there's this man over here ah look at you absolutely out of all the people that i've ever taught i'm very very very proud to have met ed in this life and had the um privilege of teaching him something it really has been an honour thank you for being my teacher in the first place you know might have beaten him in the race but he's got a skill set that is so much more in depth than mine and um and i'm humble enough to admit that you know i do not consider myself a
