how do we get from SE force in Iraq to toofer in Taiwan it was um uh YouTuber proy hisy Pro's video proy I just came across it one day and he was talking about a Taiwan wait as you can see we have a new face here in the studio here on YouTube and also here in Taiwan toer toer from the US yes who are you and what are you doing here in Taiwan I'm an English teacher by trade and I chose Taiwan because it seemed like a really interesting opportunity caught into English teaching as a way to leave the USA yeah and okay why the need of of leaving the US uh let's see um personally where do we start where do we start how long do you want this video to be well I had a few careers um my first career was as a soldier I was an army officer in the US yeah when I left the Army I was a captain he would start as a second Lieutenant then after a few years you can make first lieutenant and then you would be a captain involved in the US war with Iraq almost immediately after joining the Army so I when you say involved yeah I was in The Invasion I spent a few years in Iraq so I was there in the very first set of soldiers who went into Baghdad and Iraq and up into the north yeah like like like as as I'm picturing in my head right now with a gun helmet and like like on combat yeah yeah yeah I was a combat engineer basically an infantryman but they also give you C4 the the yeah yeah the plastic explosives they're uh designed to uh the job of the combat engineer is to destroy defenses but also to build defenses so we went from from a captain yes in the US military to teaching English in Taiwan y it was a transition it didn't happen overnight it was several years there's like there's just I gu have more questions now next to your typical foreign question do you think Taiwan is safe I do the media I think wants to portray Taiwan as potentially not being safe because it gets clicks it's going to get views right so everyone has their own motive for it the Chinese have their own motive for you know all their Bluster and the Western worlds particularly the US media have their own motive for it and you know the reality is if you really dive deep and analyze the situation if there is any sort of military action against Taiwan it's not going to be nearly as effective as what people think they will be it's not going to be like another Ukraine how do we get from sea force in Iraq to toering Taiwan I got very disillusioned with the with the just God in country US Army mentality a lot of it had to do with corporate profits which I was not cool with and so once I could leave I did leave I went to Corporate America which you know you can make some good money there but really unhappy in Corporate America I didn't last very long really kind of lost for a while you know cuz I grew up in the military and and formed a very strong identity very difficult to find people who could really relate to my situation so it was a difficult time for me transitioning trying to figure out who I wanted to be next you know the reality of having people's lives being and their safety being your responsibility ultimately is just a tremendous amount of stress no idea when it's your last day I came to the conclusion early on that time is a much more valuable resource for me than money so enjoying my time became a much higher priority than how much money can I make but that uh itch for adventure was coming I was like ah you know what I've always wanted to live in East Asia let's try out Japan how could I do that unless you speak Japanese English teaching is the easiest way for an American to go in yeah live in Japan I learned how to be a teacher and I was in Japan for about a year it's a cool country I really like it um but it wasn't perfect fit for me during the pandemic I went back to the US I just didn't know how bad it was going to be it's extraordinarily expensive so even people who are earning hundreds of thousands of dollars a year they can't miss a month of work so it's uh not not as glamorous as it seems I was looking at different places maybe I'll try living in Thailand for a while and it was um uh YouTuber proy his proy Pro's video proy I just came across it one day and he was talking about uh Taiwan wait Pro's literally the most negative foreign YouTuber we have here in Taiwan Taiwan cities look like dog they look old and tired or like they're going to fall over at any second like me you watched pra's videos and then decide to move to Taiwan I watched a pry video you know you watch a pry video then one of life in Taiwan videos will come on Allan and so okay really when I was doing my research about Taiwan I started to dive into YouTube and of course your channel Cole Fogle his channel Wes Davis I started watching a lot of taiwan-based YouTube and realized that like oh this is seems like a great opportunity even proy can do it yeah hey look this guy got a job here yeah anyone can do it but before that my exposure to Taiwan was very limited I've only known one person who actually traveled to Taiwan and she had nothing but great things to say about it but still the idea that taiwan's not a safe place was always in the back of my mind because that's all the media says I researched that and realized that that's not really the case first of all you're the the first person I've ever talked to who has watched PR's videos and then decide to move to Taiwan but it also explains to why you now live in gawong and not taong I think if you watch Pro's videos yeah your impression after watching our YouTube videos and then now after living in thawan for like 9 months yourself are we doing like Taiwan Justice or are we missing something in our videos that that you feel like no one told me this no I think I think the YouTube Community here the foreign YouTube Community does a good job doing Justice to Taiwan there are a couple things that I was still surprised by like the singing garbage trucks things like that you know nothing major and now there going to be 10c garbage truck commercial might be 1 minute a minute yeah sometimes he quite that's what she said take two your six tape I didn't realize that Taiwan was so lgbtq friendly I had no idea about that till I came here and said oh wow they have gay marriage is legal and pride parades and all that so H good job I haven't been able to do as much traveling as I would like to so there's still lot of Taiwan that I really want to see so I'm a little jealous of the YouTubers who get to go out and showcase a cool spot up in the mountains that kind of thing so how has your first 9 months been here then like what awesome how Okay the Taiwanese people are some of the most welcoming kindest nicest people I've ever met in my entire life you know I've traveled through Europe U twice all over the US been through I've lived in different parts of Asia and Taiwanese are just amazing amazing just incredible so many times when I start living or go to another country I kind of feel like a fish out of water especially when I just moved to another country I'm like is this really the right idea is this a good a good idea none of those feelings with Taiwan Taiwanese have gone out of their way to be incredibly just I don't know welcoming helpful that was surprising to me I mean it's one thing to hear it maybe on a YouTube channel but then to actually experience it is a different story I think I'm going to stay in Taiwan for a very long time I love Taiwan it's awesome it has all the benefits of a place like uh Japan which is developed and safe and great and it has a lot of the benefits of Southeast Asia which has a reasonable cost of living and good weather so especially GA Shong speaking about the experiencing the the YouTube videos now you are a YouTuber here in Taiwan as well I was very surprised basically like your first video is I come to Taiwan I don't have a job I have no idea what I'm doing here no plan but then like right away you you have a complete understanding on like the the geopolitical iCal situation and very indepth analysis on what is actually going on and how does this side of the world look like which I might say the the average stereotypical American may not have that much Insight no you're 100% right about that is that from like your your military life or is that where is that from uh I've always been interested in history and the World in general I know it's atypical for an American to be that interested in the world that like oh yeah I know where Taiwan is on the map you know that kind of thing because it's true most Americans are very American Centric you know it's a big step for an American to even move to a different city in the US that's a big life-changing event way different uh to go in and experience these things and and you know meet the people who are there and experience the culture than to just you know watch the news and think you understand understand everything from from that what has been like the biggest difference between how you thought your life was going to look like and how your life actually looks like now here in Taiwan oh wow that's a great question the biggest difference is is starting the YouTube channel it has to be because I started the channel really just to maintain a bit of a connection with my nieces and nephews back in the US and you know that's why I named it Uncle Topher cuz that's what they call me thousands of Taiwanese had watched my videos before any of my nieces and NE just watch the one oh wow late to the game I was like come on I told you about this weeks ago so I realized who my real audience is pretty quickly there yeah yeah is there anything that you wish you would have known about Taiwan before moving here could you have prepared in any other way just to make it like easier to settle in or maybe just then make it more like enjoyable your first couple of months ooh I don't know um that's a great question uh it was incredibly easy for me to settle in like I had no problems finding a job finding an apartment yeah you you told me it took took you one week to find a job got an interview lined up on day two of being here yeah I was just sitting in my hotel room and because of the jet lag I was awake at like 4:00 a.m. I thought I got nothing to do I might as well just check out Facebook and other you know websites and see if there's any jobs here in gaang sent in my CV and got a call back a few hours later check a lot of the boxes I'm not I'm not 22 you know and so I'm not going to be out partying showing up drunk into the classro you've been watching a lot of proy videos yeah he stopped drinking though yeah he did he did congratulations proy yeah good job I have enough money to move out of Tai Johnson is there anything that is on your Taiwan bucket list that you've seen maybe in our YouTube videos or that you just know about that uh you're going to go and that we might see on your YouTube channel as well oh wow let's see probably H in on the east east coast to me that was like the most beautiful place in Taiwan I've heard nothing about good things and when I started making YouTube videos I was like Juan tooco Gorge that's like the the K when it comes to to Juan and I was like I I always postponed it because I felt like my YouTube skills were not good enough yet to make it justice so in the beginning I was always like just postponing it postponing it 5 years later I still have not made a YouTube video in Haan or taco Gorge like I just haven't been there it's it's unbelievable sometimes you know it's difficult to find the time and then there's all the time editing and then all the time with the subtitles oh my gosh it's a lot more work than I think most people understand cuz I've watched hours of your content you know it's like wow feel like home then this is like uh feels like your your living room or something oh well kind of I mean but you also get sort of the you know the what's the Wizard of Oz analogy you know the man behind the curtain you kind of get the that Peak there the VIP uh behind the scenes treatment yeah so I mean I really appreciate you contacting me and watching my videos and inviting me up here that was just awesome Lucas thank you so much of course of course hopefully you will uh repay the favor and invite me down to to gong you're always welcome and if that is something that you want to see please do not forget to subscribe to my channel if you haven't already and of course also to Uncle toer likeu if you want to see more videos about maybe the more geopolitical situation but also your personal life yeah including Juan and tooco Gorge here in Taiwan thank you all so much for watching my name is Lucas starts with L as in like ends with S as in subscribe please to both and see you all in the next one
