三島手の鉢をつくる【唐津三島　陶芸】

Today, I will make a Karatsu Mishima plate. I create works using Karatsu Mishima techniques. Karatsu ware is a type of pottery that has been produced in Hizen Province - - (present-day Saga and Nagasaki Prefectures) in Japan since the 1580s. While inheriting the traditional techniques of Karatsu ware, - - I incorporate my own methods and patterns into my works. Today, I will introduce the inlay technique using a rubber scraper, - - and I hope you enjoy it until the final kiln firing. I will make a plate with a size of about 21cm (8.27inch). I stretch the clay while compacting it with a wooden rib. Using a tool made of bamboo, I carve lines on the plate. I let it dry for about 12 hours. 12 hours later... I join the edges of the plate together. This ensures even drying of the plate. I continue to let it dry until it reaches a hardness suitable for carving with a trimmer. It has dried to a suitable level. Before carving with the trimmer I stamp pattern on it. I mark the outline of the carved design with ink. I carve it with the trimmer. I apply white slip. I move the brush up and down to ensure that the clay slip fills the indentations. I use a rubber scraper to remove the excess white slip from the surface. I let it dry and then fire it once. I apply glaze. The glaze contains a higher amount of ash and iron, resulting in a greenish coloration. I smooth out any pinholes by lightly touching them with my fingers. If pinholes remain, they will appear in the final firing. I place it in the kiln for firing. It is fired at around 1240℃ (2,264 ℉) for about 14 hours. After firing, I wait for the kiln to cool for about two days. It's time to remove the pottery from the kiln. It has turned out nicely after firing. With a higher ash content in the glaze, the iron content increases, resulting in a stronger green coloration. Thank you for watching.
