hi everyone today is July 13th 2019 7:30 p.m. and I just got a report on my phone that there's a power outage in Manhattan and it affects everywhere from 42nd Street to 71st Street on the Upper West Side this is pretty crazy and I never caught a blackout live on video before this is gonna be something I've heard reports on the fire department radio that people are stuck in elevators now and in the subway stations too but it's amazing that in 2019 we have issues with our power grid I already see people gathered outside the subway station already and traffic lights aren't working luckily here on 72nd Street there's power because the cutoff was 71st but looks like everyone will be doing a lot of walking today and travelling by uber and bus Wow there's so many people here yeah so here's 71st Street and I see the first victim of the power outage this pedestrian crossing signal Wow even this Bank has an alarm going off it's pretty crazy so this is the start of the blackout 71st Street fires apartments here probably assisting people from escaping elevators yes al from 42nd Street to 71st that's what they're saying people are stuck in elevators and Subway's don't take the subway there's a power outage from 42nd Street to 71st the subways aren't working right now yeah so since this just happened people don't even know what's going on pretty crazy this restaurant no power everyone's left in the dark and it's bad news because in about an hour is the sunset if the city can't manage to get the power back on before then it's going to be very dark around here another traffic signal not working I did read reports that there's a transformer fire on 65th Street and West End Avenue that may have been the cause of this blackout here's something that doesn't require power a food truck and then the buildings in my left Chase Bank completely out of power Gina Italia no power no it's Gina mexicana people are in a state of confusion right now here in New York City everyone depends on the electricity to work especially Manhattan from everything from the subways to elevators to get up these high-rise buildings to keeping their refrigerators cold and food storage so let's just hope that the power comes back on soon this traffic signal is completely out [Music] now you kind of have to negotiate traffic between vehicles and pedestrians because there's going to be no lights directing you where to go I'm sure emergency service is going to have a difficult time tonight NYPD and FDNY are going to be working overtime tonight that's for sure the major priorities to get people who need life support services and health related equipment so that their power is up and running then the people in the elevators need to be addressed and also the people stuck in the subways so so I was actually planning to get pictures and video of Manhattanhenge today from 72nd Street but now this happened so I don't want to be watching a sunset when there's no power out I mean when there's no power the Lincoln Square dear obviously no movies tonight because there's no power apple store no power the gap oh my gosh luckily it's not too humid out this around 84 degrees Fahrenheit I believe let this well it's really hard to negotiate with cars and traffic this is unbelievable right now I'm approaching Lincoln Center and I'm shocked that Lincoln Center doesn't have power [Music] here's a traffic signal maintenance company but I doubt they'll be able to do anything when there's a city citywide blackout like this along Manhattan that transform must have been really important here's my famous wait button obviously not working Lincoln Center absolutely no power at all subway completely dark I would not go into the subway right now Ashley I think I will just for a quick minute just to see how it is what it's like in the subway system [Music] tulay five minutes wow this is crazy subway is completely dark that's your bar machine's not working at all this is freaky freaky as hell big shout out to everyone and NYPD and FDNY they have a big big night ahead of them major respect thank you for directing traffic thank you it's great to see normal New Yorkers directing traffic like this we definitely need people like them I would never it's unbelievable Wow look at this what are they supposed to be Bed Bath & Beyond beyond power that's what they are unbelievable how I managed to be in Manhattan at this exact time where the power went out and where I was was the cutoff it's just unbelievable I was eating at a restaurant at 72nd Street and Broadway and the power went out all the way up to 71st Street at that restaurant they didn't even take credit cards because the credit card machine was all out I had to pay with cash Lincoln Center everyone's outside wondering what's going on Wow usually these restaurants are so Lively right now and right now people are just finishing up their meals I guess they'll have to close up early because their refrigerators aren't working some of them use electric stoves and ovens they all need power I was reading the citizen app earlier and Staten Island has no power as well or maybe just a portion of Staten Island or it could be a false report who knows but let me just open it up again and see what's going on of course you're gonna have the normal trolls that say like aliens are invading or like I don't know it's some supernatural event but I will let this taxi go or if people don't want to give them the opportunity then I'll go I have 48 percent battery on my phone these food trucks are a lifesaver for many people here because places like this the left aren't working they can't deliver the food but after checking the citizen app it's still between 40th Street and 70th Street no power [Applause] Oh Wow as wide as always here I did hear reports - that even cellphones are having trouble getting serviced now funny to hear people's conversations I wonder if people have to work tomorrow if the power continues like this like employees of this Chase Bank branch what happens if their power is out money can't transact well if anyone wants to see Manhattanhenge there it is the sunset is an officially until 821 I believe it's 748 p.m. right now by the time I get to Times Square maybe I'll be able to get a glimpse of it Columbus Circle no power time warner center big building in New York City no power the Trump International Hotel in power really hope no one's stuck in those elevators it's a big building and now that I'm passing Columbus Circle there's going to be even bigger buildings going down it's in Midtown okay police department has closed off the station wow this is crazy Thank You mr. Popham everyone [Music] [Music] I wouldn't be in Central Park at this time it's going to be really dark especially in the wooded areas hey at least Central Park West has power maybe they restored it I'm going to check citizen again this is New York City folks one of the most popular cities in the United States major blackout of 2019 at least for this portion of Manhattan I hope it doesn't spread at least it's not a citywide blackout it just seems to be concentrated along the west side I am looking down Broadway right now there's no track no power of those traffic lights so it's continuing Oh No [Music] 59th Street Wow that entire mall has no power wait okay now this is the moment of truth I've just officially entered Midtown this is where all the sensual business activity of New York City happens well no power wine storm Isaac Mason Kaiser no power the museum seems to have lights on maybe they're running on backup power it is so dark under the scaffolding it's kind of creepy actually could be down our checkout alley 57th Street billionaires row no power open no power on 57th Street well Manhattanhenge is coming but once the Sun sets is going to be very very chaotic if the lights aren't back on in midtown Manhattan especially if the subways aren't running you can only fit so many people on buses [Music] [Music] you know what I feel really really scared about those peoples the people and elevators who don't have any means of communicating with the outside world what if their cell phone signal doesn't work or worse yet they don't even have a phone or the alarm buttons don't work because they need power hopefully there's someone in the building that will know that people are stuck I have never seen Broadway like this this is incredible [Music] come on fire department we're counting on you 55th Street now I can just see Times Square right now it's in within viewing range only eight blocks left until I hit Times Square officially these people all outside the Sarafina know power because this is such a wide range of min Han I doubt that this will get fixed anytime soon back so for those who are curious I'm going to open up Ober right now let's see how much an uber costs during this blackout you know where's okay there's a birth cert ricing right now from the Hilton Garden Inn to Chinatown is 47 96 but I say $5 so it isn't too bad yet it does seem like an ordered calm right now people aren't panicking yet then again it's only been about 45 minutes since the blackout first started and there is power on the East Side of Manhattan oh my goodness look at all the people outside the theater for all we dear subway stations still out right now I'm just speechless everyone 52nd Street FDNY's here there's the Sun going down [Music] you'll be better off getting I know I'm going to have some people saying it's Manhattanhenge that calls the blackout of 2019 Wow only this newsstand is open for business I do hear some trains running the subway system does have some backup power that are able to move trains for a limited time but they still depend on the city's electric grid to run the powers working now at 51st Street although on 50th there is a light out still looks like 7th is working [Music] Beetlejuice has power so it's kind of strange there's parts of this area with power and parts that aren't [Music] Applebee's has power the streetlights without power there's the Sun setting this souvenir shop has power Times Square is open for business folks no power outage in Times Square from what I can see anyway in this in this preliminary walk show its beginnings when we see the billboards all dark in Times Square I don't know the CD hustlers all hanging out because there's no power talking about what's happening take a look at that sunsetting I was on 42nd Street yesterday filming Manhattanhenge looks like unexpectedly I'll be here again the same spot the Sun is really bright though I may have to put on my shades so visit your folks Time Square is oh wow in Times Square half of the bill boys on the western side are out and then the eastern side is working I can see it already Rocketman all I have to say this is I have never ever seen the lights go out at Times Square this is unbelievable pause show blackout and Manhattan folks Western sighs not working Eastern side is work [Music] this display is working this is my favorite spot in New York City everyone and it is without power [Music] this is the moment of truth for you test your New York navigation skills to get around people stopping and take pictures of the calamity Wow every are you there 1 Times Square where the ball drops no power yeah [Music] it's chaotic here people don't know whether to take pictures or to go through it might the sun's about to set in New York City everyone Marriott Marquis without power and this side all right I'm going to be a little bit smart here and walk on the far side so at least I can move I have a hard time imagining what it would be for these businesses if their powers not running credit cards don't work electricity [Music] never sleeps wow I just got shot by a livestreamer folks he just set a pandemonium and he calls it his Sutton himself [Music] just turn Times Square pedestrians only already this is too much traffic I'm just going to walk to the left because everyone's moving that direction and that seems to be the only way where it's moving this is plan chaos folks with the city digging up the western side of the eastern side of the sidewalk making it already more now than it is imagine waiting for New Year's Eve and then the power doesn't work in Times Square the New Year will never come I'm only two blocks away from 42nd Street now we've got the blackout people and Manhattanhenge observers at the same time unreal this is madness I want to reference the movie 300 right now this is madness this is sparta well this is New York City blackout 2019 lids no power Hard Rock Cafe no power so the Sun setting in six minutes everyone 8:21 is one of the Sun officially officially sets I'm outside I'm not going here's an undercover police officer what craziness folks what craziness also the city's creating more traffic with all these high-security ballers narrowing the sidewalk even more and now I met the most desired Street for the Manhattanhenge sunset 42nd Street and people are blocking the intersection and streets as usual to get the best view of the sunset [Music] let's see if I'm able to get a glimpse of the sunset before it officially sets 821 s the set
